De vise männen

(A) När Jesus var född i Betlehem i Judeen på kung Herodes tid[a], då kom vise män[b] från Östern till Jerusalem (B) och frågade: "Var är judarnas nyfödde kung? Vi har sett hans stjärna gå upp och har kommit för att tillbe honom."

När kung Herodes fick höra det blev han förskräckt, och hela Jerusalem med honom.

  1. 2:1 kung Herodes tid   Herodes den store var kung över Judeen 37-4 f Kr. Han var en grym och misstänksam härskare som hade avrättat många för att bevara sin maktposition, även hustrun Mariamne och flera söner. Troligen föddes Jesus ca 5 f Kr (vår tideräknings början utgår från en inexakt beräkning från 500-talet e Kr).
  2. 2:1 vise män   Grek. mágoi syftade ursprungligen på präster i persiska Medien dit israelitiska stammar en gång hade förvisats (2 Kung 17:6). Magerna var berömda dröm- och stjärntydare och ordet kom därför att användas även om babyloniska stjärntydare (Dan 2:2). Messiasprofetian om stjärnan från Jakob (4 Mos 24:17) kan ha tilldragit sig deras intresse.

The Magi Visit the Messiah

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,(A) during the time of King Herod,(B) Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?(C) We saw his star(D) when it rose and have come to worship him.”

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
