11 När Jesus hade gett sina tolv lärjungar alla dessa föreskrifter, gick han därifrån för att undervisa och predika i deras städer.
Jesus svarar Johannes Döparen
2 Johannes fick i fängelset höra talas om Kristi gärningar. Han sände då bud med sina lärjungar 3 och frågade honom: "Är du den som skulle komma,[a] eller skall vi vänta på någon annan?" 4 Jesus svarade dem: "Gå och berätta för Johannes vad ni hör och ser: 5 Blinda får sin syn, lama går, spetälska blir rena, döva hör, döda uppstår och för fattiga predikas glädjens budskap. 6 Och salig är den som inte tar anstöt av mig."
Jesus vittnar om Johannes
7 När de hade gått, började Jesus tala till folket om Johannes: "Vad gick ni ut i öknen för att se? Ett strå som vajar för vinden? 8 Om inte, vad gick ni ut för att se? En man klädd i fina kläder? Se, de som bär fina kläder finns i kungapalatsen. 9 Men vad gick ni då ut för att se? En profet? Ja, det säger jag er: Han är ännu mer än en profet. 10 Det är om honom det står skrivet: Se, jag sänder min budbärare framför dig, och han skall bereda vägen för dig. [b] 11 Amen säger jag er: Bland dem som är födda av kvinnor har ingen trätt fram som är större än Johannes Döparen. Men den mindre[c] i himmelriket är större än han. 12 Och från Johannes Döparens dagar ända till nu är himmelriket utsatt för våld, och våldsmän förtrycker det. 13 Ty alla profeterna och lagen har profeterat fram till Johannes, 14 och om ni vill ta emot det - han är den Elia som skulle komma. 15 Lyssna, du som har öron!
16 Vad skall jag likna detta släkte vid? De liknar barn, som sitter på torgen och ropar till andra barn: 17 Vi har spelat flöjt för er, men ni dansade inte. Vi har sjungit sorgesånger, men ni grät inte. 18 Johannes kom, och han varken äter eller dricker,[d] och man säger: Han är besatt[e]. 19 Människosonen kom, och han äter och dricker, och då säger man: Se, vilken frossare och drinkare, en vän till publikaner och syndare! Men Visheten har fått rätt av sina barn."[f]
Jesu verop
20 Sedan började Jesus gå till rätta med de städer där han hade utfört sina många kraftgärningar och förebrå dem att de inte hade omvänt sig. 21 "Ve dig, Korasin! Ve dig, Betsaida! Ty om de kraftgärningar som har utförts hos er hade blivit gjorda i Tyrus och Sidon, skulle de för länge sedan ha omvänt sig i säck och aska.[g] 22 Jag säger er: För Tyrus och Sidon skall det på domens dag bli lindrigare än för er. 23 Och du, Kapernaum, skall du kanske upphöjas till himlen? Nej, ner i helvetet[h] skall du fara. Ty om de kraftgärningar som har utförts i dig hade gjorts i Sodom, skulle det ha stått ännu i dag. 24 Men jag säger er: För Sodoms land skall det på domens dag vara lindrigare än för dig."
Jesus är Guds vishet
25 Vid den tiden sade Jesus: "Jag prisar dig, Fader, du himlens och jordens Herre, för att du har dolt detta för de visa och kloka och uppenbarat det för de små. 26 Ja, Fader, detta var din goda vilja. 27 Allt har min Fader överlämnat åt mig. Och ingen känner Sonen utom Fadern. Inte heller känner någon Fadern utom Sonen och den som Sonen vill uppenbara honom för. 28 Kom till mig, alla ni som arbetar och bär på tunga bördor,[i] så skall jag ge er vila. 29 Ta på er mitt ok och lär av mig, ty jag är mild och ödmjuk i hjärtat. Då skall ni finna ro för era själar. 30 Ty mitt ok är milt, och min börda är lätt."

11 När Jesus hade givit sina tolv lärjungar alla dessa bud, gick han därifrån vidare, för att undervisa och predika i deras städer.
2 Men när Johannes i sitt fängelse fick höra om Kristi gärningar, sände han bud med sina lärjungar
3 och lät fråga honom: »Är du den som skulle komma, eller skola vi förbida någon annan?»
4 Då svarade Jesus och sade till dem: »Gån tillbaka och omtalen för Johannes vad I hören och sen:
5 blinda få sin syn, halta gå, spetälska bliva rena, döva höra, döda uppstå, och 'för fattiga förkunnas glädjens budskap'.
6 Och salig är den för vilken jag icke bliver en stötesten.»
7 När dessa sedan gingo bort, begynte Jesus tala till folket om Johannes: »Varför var det I gingen ut i öknen? Var det för att se ett rör som drives hit och dit av vinden?
8 Eller varför gingen I ut? Var det för att se en människa klädd i fina kläder? De som bära fina kläder, dem finnen I ju i konungapalatsen.
9 Varför gingen I då ut? Var det för att se en profet? Ja, jag säger eder: Ännu mer än en profet är han.
10 Han är den om vilken det är skrivet: 'Se, jag sänder ut min ängel framför dig, och han skall bereda vägen för dig.'
11 Sannerligen säger jag eder: Bland dem som äro födda av kvinnor har ingen uppstått, som har varit större än Johannes döparen; men den som är minst i himmelriket är likväl större än han.
12 Och från Johannes döparens dagar intill denna stund tränger himmelriket fram med storm, och människor storma fram och rycka det till sig.
13 Ty alla profeterna och lagen hava profeterat intill Johannes;
14 och om I viljen tro det: han är Elias, den som skulle komma.
15 Den som har öron, han höre.
16 Men vad skall jag likna detta släkte vid? Det är likt barn som sitta på torgen och ropa till andra barn
17 och säga: 'Vi hava spelat för eder, och I haven icke dansat; vi hava sjungit sorgesång, och I haven icke jämrat eder.'
18 Ty Johannes kom, och han varken äter eller dricker, och så säger man: 'Han är besatt av en ond ande.'
19 Människosonen kom, och han både äter och dricker, och nu säger man: 'Se vilken frossare och vindrinkare han är, en publikaners och syndares vän!' Men Visheten har fått rätt av sina barn.»
20 Därefter begynte han tala bestraffande ord till de städer i vilka han hade utfört så många av sina kraftgärningar, och förehålla dem att de icke hade gjort bättring:
21 »Ve dig, Korasin! Ve dig, Betsaida! Ty om de kraftgärningar som äro gjorda i eder hade blivit gjorda i Tyrus och Sidon, så skulle de för länge sedan hava gjort bättring i säck och aska.
22 Men jag säger eder: För Tyrus och Sidon skall det på domens dag bliva drägligare än för eder.
23 Och du, Kapernaum, skall väl du bliva upphöjt till himmelen? Nej, ned till dödsriket måste du fara. Ty om de kraftgärningar som äro gjorda i dig hade blivit gjorda i Sodom, så skulle det hava stått ännu i dag.
24 Men jag säger eder att det för Sodoms land skall på domens dag bliva drägligare än för dig.»
25 Vid den tiden talade Jesus och sade: »Jag prisar dig, Fader, du himmelens och jordens Herre, för att du väl har dolt detta för de visa och kloka, men uppenbarat det för de enfaldiga.
26 Ja, Fader; så har ju varit ditt behag.
27 Allt har av min Fader blivit förtrott åt mig. Och ingen känner Sonen utom Fadern, ej heller känner någon Fadern utom Sonen och den för vilken Sonen vill göra honom känd. --
28 Kommen till mig, I alla som arbeten och ären betungade, så skall jag giva eder ro.
29 Tagen på eder mitt ok och lären av mig, ty jag är saktmodig och ödmjuk i hjärtat; 'så skolen I finna ro för edra själar'.
30 Ty mitt ok är milt, och min börda är lätt.»

Jesus and John the Baptist(A)
11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(B) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[a]
2 When John,(C) who was in prison,(D) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(E) or should we expect someone else?”
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[b] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(F) 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(G)
7 As John’s(H) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(I) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(J) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(M) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(N) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(O)
16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating(P) nor drinking,(Q) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(R) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
Woe on Unrepentant Towns(S)
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(T) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(U) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(V) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(W) 23 And you, Capernaum,(X) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[e](Y) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(Z)
The Father Revealed in the Son(AA)
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(AB) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(AC) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me(AD) by my Father.(AE) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(AF)
28 “Come to me,(AG) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(AH) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(AI) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(AJ) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(AK)

11 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
