6 «Guardatevi dal fare la vostra elemosina davanti agli uomini, per essere da loro ammirati; altrimenti voi non ne avrete ricompensa presso il Padre vostro, che è nei cieli.
2 Quando dunque fai l'elemosina, non far suonare la tromba davanti a te, come fanno gli ipocriti nelle sinagoghe e nelle strade, per essere onorati dagli uomini; in verità vi dico, che essi hanno già ricevuto il loro premio.
3 Anzi quando tu fai l'elemosina non sappia la tua sinistra quello che fa la destra.
4 affinché la tua elemosina si faccia in segreto; e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto te ne darà la ricompensa palesemente.
5 E quando tu preghi, non essere come gli ipocriti, perché essi amano pregare stando in piedi nelle sinagoghe, e agli angoli delle piazze, per essere visti dagli uomini; in verità vi dico che essi hanno già ricevuto il loro premio.
6 Ma tu, quando preghi, entra nella tua cameretta, chiudi la tua porta e prega il Padre tuo nel segreto; e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto, ti ricompenserà pubblicamente.
7 Ora, nel pregare, non usate inutili ripetizioni come fanno i pagani perché essi pensano di essere esauditi per il gran numero delle loro parole.
8 Non siate dunque come loro, perché il Padre vostro sa le cose di cui avete bisogno prima che gliele chiediate.
9 Voi dunque pregate in questa maniera: "Padre nostro che sei nei cieli, sia santificato il tuo nome.
10 Venga il tuo regno. Sia fatta la tua volontà in terra come in cielo.
11 Dacci oggi il nostro pane necessario.
12 E perdonaci i nostri debiti, come anche noi perdoniamo ai nostri debitori.
13 E non esporci alla tentazione, ma liberaci dal maligno, perché tuo è il regno e la potenza e la gloria in eterno. Amen".
14 Perché, se voi perdonate agli uomini le loro offese, il vostro Padre celeste perdonerà anche a voi;
15 ma se voi non perdonate agli uomini le loro offese, neppure il Padre vostro perdonerà le vostre.
16 Ora, quando digiunate, non siate mesti d'aspetto come gli ipocriti; perché essi si sfigurano la faccia per mostrare agli uomini che digiunano, in verità vi dico che essi hanno già ricevuto il loro premio.
17 Ma tu, quando digiuni, ungiti il capo e lavati la faccia,
18 per non mostrare agli uomini che tu digiuni, ma al Padre tuo nel segreto, e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto, te ne darà la ricompensa pubblicamente».
19 «Non vi fate tesori sulla terra, dove la tignola e la ruggine guastano, e dove i ladri sfondano e rubano,
20 anzi fatevi tesori in cielo, dove né tignola né ruggine consumano, e dove i ladri non sfondano e non rubano.
21 Perché dov'è il vostro tesoro, là sarà anche il vostro cuore.
22 La lampada del corpo è l'occhio; se dunque l'occhio tuo è puro, tutto il tuo corpo sarà illuminato
23 ma se l'occhio tuo è viziato, tutto il tuo corpo sarà tenebroso, se dunque la luce che è in te è tenebre, quanto grandi saranno quelle tenebre!
24 Nessuno può servire a due padroni, perché o odierà l'uno e amerà l'altro; oppure sarà fedele all'uno e disprezzerà l'altro; voi non potete servire a Dio e a mammona.
25 Perciò io vi dico: Non siate con ansietà solleciti per la vostra vita, di quello che mangerete o berrete, né per il vostro corpo, di che vi vestirete. La vita non vale piú del cibo e il corpo piú del vestito?
26 Osservate gli uccelli del cielo: essi non seminano non mietono e non raccolgono in granai; eppure il Padre vostro celeste li nutre. Non valete voi molto piú di loro?
27 E chi di voi, con la sua sollecitudine, può aggiungere alla sua statura un solo cubito?
28 Perché siete in ansietà intorno al vestire? Considerate come crescono i gigli della campagna: essi non faticano e non filano;
29 eppure io vi dico, che Salomone stesso, con tutta la sua gloria, non fu vestito come uno di loro.
30 Ora se Dio riveste in questa maniera l'erba dei campi, che oggi è e domani è gettata nel forno, quanto piú vestirà voi o uomini di poca fede?
31 Non siate dunque in ansietà, dicendo: "Che mangeremo, o che berremo, o di che ci vestiremo?
32 Poiché sono i gentili quelli che cercano tutte queste cose, il Padre vostro celeste, infatti, sa che avete bisogno di tutte queste cose.
33 Ma cercate prima il regno di Dio e la sua giustizia, e tutte queste cose vi saranno sopraggiunte.
34 Non siate dunque in ansietà del domani, perché il domani si prenderà cura per conto suo. Basta a ciascun giorno il suo affanno».

La Bibbia della Gioia
6 State attenti a non fare pubblicamente le vostre buone azioni per essere ammirati, altrimenti perderete la ricompensa dal Padre vostro che è in cielo. 2 Quando fate lʼelemosina, non fatelo sapere in giro, come fanno gli ipocriti, che fanno suonare la tromba nelle sinagoghe e per le strade per richiamare lʼattenzione della gente sui loro atti di carità! Vi dico in tutta sincerità che, così facendo, hanno già ricevuto tutta la loro ricompensa. 3 Ma quando fate un favore a qualcuno, fatelo di nascosto, non dite alla vostra mano sinistra ciò che sta facendo la destra. 4 E il Padre vostro, che conosce tutti i segreti, vi ricompenserà.
Preghiere e digiuno
5 Ed ora parliamo della preghiera. Quando pregate, non fate come glʼipocriti che si mettono a pregare in pubblico, agli angoli delle strade e nelle sinagoghe, dove tutti li possono vedere. Vi assicuro che questa è la sola ricompensa che ottengono. 6 Ma, quando pregate, restatevene per conto vostro, soli soletti; chiudete la porta dietro di voi e pregate il Padre vostro segretamente. E Dio, che conosce i vostri segreti, vi ricompenserà.
7-8 Non recitate continuamente le stesse preghiere, come fanno i pagani, che pensano di essere esauditi se ripetono allʼinfinito le stesse parole. Ricordate che vostro Padre sa esattamente ciò di cui avete bisogno ancor prima che glielo chiediate.
9 Pregate così: “Padre nostro che sei in cielo, sia santificato il tuo nome. 10 Venga il tuo Regno. Sia fatta la tua volontà qui in terra, come in cielo. 11 Dacci anche oggi il cibo necessario 12 e perdona i nostri peccati, come noi abbiamo perdonato quelli che ci hanno fatto dei torti. 13 Faʼ che non cediamo alla tentazione, ma liberaci dal male. Amen!” 14-15 Vostro Padre che è in cielo vi perdonerà, se perdonerete quelli che hanno peccato contro di voi; ma se non perdonerete gli altri neanche lui vi perdonerà.
16 Ed ora parliamo del digiuno. Quando digiunate per uno scopo spirituale, non fatelo in pubblico, come glʼipocriti, che cercano di apparire pallidi ed emaciati per farsi ammirare dalla gente. Per la verità, quella è la sola ricompensa che ne avranno. 17 Quando digiunate, mostratevi in forma, invece, 18 in modo che nessuno sospetti che avete fame, eccetto vostro Padre, che conosce tutti i segreti. Ed egli vi ricompenserà.
19 Non accumulate ricchezze qui sulla terra, dove possono essere rovinate dai tarli e dalla ruggine o rubate dai ladri. 20 Accumulatele in cielo, invece, dove non perderanno mai il loro valore e sono al sicuro dai ladri. 21 Se i tuoi risparmi sono in cielo, anche il tuo cuore sarà là.
22 Se il tuo occhio è puro, tutta la tua anima ne sarà illuminata. 23 Ma se il tuo occhio è contaminato da pensieri e desideri cattivi resterai nel più profondo buio spirituale. E non puoi immaginare quanto quel buio possa essere profondo!
24 Non potete servire due padroni: Dio e il denaro. Perché o odierete uno e amerete lʼaltro, o viceversa.
25 Questo perciò è il mio consiglio: non preoccupatevi delle cose materiali come mangiare, bere, denaro e vestiti. Non è forse vero che la vita è più importante del cibo e che il corpo è più importante dei vestiti? 26 Guardate gli uccelli! Non si preoccupano del cibo. Non seminano, non mietono, né fanno provviste, perché il Padre vostro che è in cielo li nutre. E voi siete di gran lunga più importanti degli uccelli per lui! 27 Pensate forse che tutte le vostre preoccupazioni possano allungarvi la vita anche di un solo momento?
28 E perché preoccuparsi dellʼabbigliamento? Guardate i gigli di campo, non si preoccupano del loro. 29 Eppure io vi dico che nemmeno il re Salomone in tutta la sua gloria ha mai avuto un vestito così bello! 30 E se Dio si cura tanto dei fiori, che sono qui oggi e domani non ci saranno più, non avrà certamente più cura di voi, o uomini di poca fede?
31-32 Perciò, non preoccupatevi affatto di avere cibo e abiti a sufficienza! Perché essere come i pagani? Sono loro che vivono per queste cose e se ne preoccupano fino in fondo. Ma il vostro Padre che è in cielo sa già perfettamente che ne avete bisogno. 33 E ve le darà volentieri, se voi cercherete prima il Regno di Dio e la sua giustizia.
34 Perciò, non siate ansiosi per il vostro domani. Sarà il domani stesso a portarvi nuove preoccupazioni. Preoccupatevi di un giorno per volta.

6 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Jesus teaches people how to help poor people
6 Jesus then said to them, ‘You should do good things to help people. But be careful! Do not do this so that other people see you. If you want other people to praise you, your Father in heaven will not praise you.
2 When you give something to a poor person, do not tell anyone about it. The hypocrites do this in their meeting places. They also do it in the busy streets of the town. They do this so that other people will praise them. I tell you this. They have already received their gift. God will not give them anything more.[a]
3 So when you give something to a poor person, keep it a secret from other people. Do not tell anyone. Your left hand will not even know what your right hand does! 4 Nobody else will know about the good thing that you have done. But God sees the things that you do secretly. In return, he will give you good things.’
Jesus teaches people how to pray
5 ‘Also, you must not pray in the way that the hypocrites pray. They like to stand and pray in their meeting places. They like to do it on the corners of the busy streets.[b] Then many people will see them and they will praise them. I tell you this. They have already received their gift from people. God will not give them anything more.
6 But this is how you should pray. Go to a place in your house where you can be alone. You can shut the door and you can pray to God your Father. He is in that secret place. He sees what you do there. He will give you good things in return. 7 When you pray, do not say the same words many times. People who do not believe in God do that. They use many words that mean nothing. They think that when they pray like that, their gods will hear them. 8 Do not pray like they do. God your Father already knows what you need. He knows this even before you ask him.
9 So this is how you should pray:
“God, our Father who is in heaven,
we want people to give honour to you.
10 We want the day when you rule everyone to come soon.
We want everyone to obey you on earth, like everyone in heaven obeys you.
11 Please give us the food that we need today.
12 We have forgiven people who have done wrong things to us.
In the same way, please forgive us for the wrong things that we have done.
13 Do not let us agree to do wrong things.
Keep us safe from Satan.” ’
14 Then Jesus said, ‘When other people do wrong things against you, you must forgive them. Then God, your Father in heaven, will also forgive you for the wrong things that you have done. 15 But if you do not forgive other people, then your Father will not forgive you.’
Jesus teaches people about different things
16 Jesus then said, ‘You may decide to fast for some time.[c] But do not look sad so that people know you are doing a special thing. Hypocrites want people to see how good they are. They make their faces dirty. Then other people can see that they are fasting. I tell you this: people have praised them and that is the only gift that they will get. 17 But when you fast for some time, you should wash your face. Make your hair look nice. 18 Then other people will not know that you are doing a special thing. But God, your Father, will know. You do not see him but he sees what you do secretly. He will give you good things in return.
19 Do not want to have many valuable things here in the world. Insects or water can destroy those kinds of things. Or people may come into your house and they can rob you of those things. 20 Instead, you should want to have valuable things in heaven. Insects and water cannot destroy anything there. Men cannot rob you of your things there. 21 Then you will be thinking a lot about heaven, because that is where you keep your valuable things.[d]
22 Your eyes are like lamps and your body is like a room. Make sure that your eyes are like a clean lamp, then your whole body will have light. 23 If your eyes are not good, then your whole body will be in the dark. If the light in you has become dark, you will be living in a very dark place.’[e]
24 Jesus said, ‘Nobody can work as a slave for two masters at the same time. Maybe he will hate one of the masters, but he will love the other one. Or he will work well for one master, but he will think bad things about the other master. God and money are like different masters. You cannot work for both of them.
25 So I tell you this. You should not worry about how to stay alive. Do not worry about the food and drink that you need. Do not worry about the clothes that you need to wear. Your life is more important than the food that you eat. Your body is more important than your clothes. 26 Think about the wild birds. They do not plant seeds in the ground. They do not cut down plants to eat. They have no buildings to store food. But God, your Father in heaven, gives them food to eat. You are much more valuable than the birds. 27 Even if you always worry about your life, you cannot make it as much as one hour longer!
28 You should not worry about your clothes. Think about how the wild flowers grow. They do not work or make clothes for themselves. 29 But I tell you this. Even one wild flower is more beautiful than King Solomon was. And King Solomon wore the most beautiful clothes. 30 It is God that gives beautiful clothes even to the grass. One day the grass is growing in the field, but the next day people will cut it and burn it.[f] God will certainly take care of you, much more than he takes care of the grass. You should trust him more than you do!
31 So do not worry about these things. Do not always say, “What will we eat?”, or “What will we drink?”, or “What will we wear?” 32 People who do not know God are always trying to get these things. But as for you, your Father in heaven knows that you need them. 33 Instead, always think about the things that are important in the kingdom of heaven. Always do what God shows you is right. Then he will also give you the things that you need each day. 34 So do not have trouble in your mind about what might happen tomorrow. Tomorrow will have its own problems. It is enough for you to be thinking each day about the problems of that day.’

- 6:2 Hypocrites want people to think that they are good. But they are not really good people.
- 6:5 The corners of the streets were places where Jews met to pray. They also prayed in the special buildings. In those places there were a lot of people who could see them when they were praying.
- 6:16 Some people stop eating for hours or days so that they can have more time with God. This causes them to feel nearer to God when they pray. But the hypocrites did it for the wrong reason.
- 6:21 People think about their valuable things, so it is better to have them stored with God in heaven above. They will be safe there. We will also think about going to be with God.
- 6:23 Jesus himself is the light that he is talking about. If a person lets Jesus rule his life, there will be nothing dark or hidden. But some people do not believe Jesus' words. They are like a person who is living in the dark.
- 6:30 People burned dry grass and wild flowers on fires to cook their food.
