Gesù rimprovera i farisei
16 (A)I farisei e i sadducei si avvicinarono a lui per metterlo alla prova e gli chiesero di mostrare loro un segno dal cielo. 2 Ma egli rispose loro: {«Quando si fa sera, voi dite: “Bel tempo, perché il cielo rosseggia!” 3 e al mattino: “Oggi tempesta, perché il cielo rosseggia cupo!” [Ipocriti!] L’aspetto del cielo lo sapete dunque discernere, e i segni dei tempi non riuscite a discernerli?} 4 Una generazione malvagia e adultera chiede un segno, e segno non le sarà dato se non il segno di Giona[a]». E, lasciatili, se ne andò.
5 I [suoi] discepoli, passati all’altra riva, si erano dimenticati di prendere dei pani. 6 E Gesù disse loro: «Guardatevi bene dal lievito dei farisei e dei sadducei». 7 Ed essi ragionavano tra di loro e dicevano: «È perché non abbiamo preso dei pani». 8 Ma Gesù se ne accorse e disse [loro]: «Gente di poca fede, perché discutete tra di voi del fatto di non aver pane[b]? 9 Non capite ancora? Non vi ricordate dei cinque pani dei cinquemila uomini e quante ceste ne portaste via? 10 Né dei sette pani dei quattromila uomini e quanti panieri ne portaste via? 11 Come mai non capite che non è di pani che io vi parlavo? Ma guardatevi dal lievito dei farisei e dei sadducei[c]». 12 Allora capirono che non aveva loro detto di guardarsi dal lievito dei pani[d], ma dall’insegnamento dei farisei e dei sadducei.
Pietro riconosce in Gesù il Cristo
13 (B)Poi Gesù, giunto nei dintorni di Cesarea di Filippo, domandò ai suoi discepoli: «Chi dice la gente che sia il Figlio dell’uomo?[e]» 14 Essi risposero: «Alcuni, Giovanni il battista; altri, Elia; altri, Geremia o uno dei profeti». 15 Ed egli disse loro: «E voi, chi dite che io sia?» 16 Simon Pietro rispose: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente».
17 Gesù, replicando, gli disse: «Tu sei beato, Simone, figlio di Giona, perché non la carne e il sangue ti hanno rivelato questo, ma il Padre mio che è nei cieli. 18 E anch’io ti dico: tu sei Pietro, e su questa pietra[f] edificherò la mia chiesa, e le porte dell’Ades[g] non la potranno vincere. 19 Io ti darò le chiavi del regno dei cieli; tutto ciò che legherai in terra sarà legato nei cieli, e tutto ciò che scioglierai in terra sarà sciolto nei cieli». 20 Allora ordinò ai [suoi] discepoli di non dire a nessuno che egli era [Gesù,] il Cristo.
Gesù annuncia la sua morte e la sua risurrezione
21 (C)Da allora Gesù cominciò a spiegare ai suoi discepoli che doveva andare a Gerusalemme e soffrire molte cose da parte degli anziani, dei capi dei sacerdoti e degli scribi, essere ucciso e risuscitare il terzo giorno. 22 Pietro, trattolo da parte, cominciò a rimproverarlo, dicendo: «Dio non voglia[h], Signore! Questo non ti avverrà mai». 23 Ma egli, voltatosi, disse a Pietro: «Vattene via da me, Satana! Tu mi sei di scandalo. Tu non hai il senso delle cose di Dio, ma delle cose degli uomini».
Il prezzo del discepolato
24 (D)Allora Gesù disse ai suoi discepoli: «Se uno vuol venire dietro a me, rinunci a se stesso, prenda la sua croce e mi segua. 25 Perché chi vorrà salvare la sua vita, la perderà; ma chi avrà perduto la sua vita per causa mia, la troverà. 26 Che gioverà[i] a un uomo se, dopo aver guadagnato tutto il mondo, perde poi l’anima[j] sua? O che darà l’uomo in cambio dell’anima sua? 27 Perché il Figlio dell’uomo verrà nella gloria del Padre suo, con i suoi angeli, e allora renderà a ciascuno secondo l’opera sua. 28 In verità vi dico che alcuni di coloro che sono qui presenti non gusteranno la morte finché non abbiano visto il Figlio dell’uomo venire nel suo regno».

2 But he answering said to them, When evening is come, ye say, Fine weather, for the sky is red;
3 and in the morning, A storm to-day, for the sky is red [and] lowering; ye know [how] to discern the face of the sky, but ye cannot the signs of the times.
4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and a sign shall not be given to it save the sign of Jonas. And he left them and went away.
5 And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.
6 And Jesus said to them, See and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, Because we have taken no bread.
8 And Jesus knowing [it], said, Why reason ye among yourselves, O ye of little faith, because ye have taken no bread?
9 Do ye not yet understand nor remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many hand-baskets ye took [up]?
10 nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took [up]?
11 How do ye not understand that [it was] not concerning bread I said to you, Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?
12 Then they comprehended that he did not speak of being beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13 But when Jesus was come into the parts of Caesarea-Philippi, he demanded of his disciples, saying, Who do men say that I the Son of man am?
14 And they said, Some, John the baptist; and others, Elias; and others again, Jeremias or one of the prophets.
15 He says to them, But *ye*, who do ye say that I am?
16 And Simon Peter answering said, *Thou* art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answering said to him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona, for flesh and blood has not revealed [it] to thee, but my Father who is in the heavens.
18 And *I* also, I say unto thee that *thou* art Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and hades' gates shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of the heavens; and whatsoever thou mayest bind upon the earth shall be bound in the heavens; and whatsoever thou mayest loose on the earth shall be loosed in the heavens.
20 Then he enjoined on his disciples that they should say to no man that he was the Christ.
21 From that time Jesus began to shew to his disciples that he must go away to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised.
22 And Peter taking him to [him] began to rebuke him, saying, [God] be favourable to thee, Lord; this shall in no wise be unto thee.
23 But turning round, he said to Peter, Get away behind me, Satan; thou art an offence to me, for thy mind is not on the things that are of God, but on the things that are of men.
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, If any one desires to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
25 For whosoever shall desire to save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake shall find it.
26 For what does a man profit, if he should gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
27 For the Son of man is about to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to each according to his doings.
28 Verily I say unto you, There are some of those standing here that shall not taste of death at all until they shall have seen the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

The Demand for a Sign(A)
16 The Pharisees and Sadducees(B) came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.(C)
2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a](D) 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.”(E) Jesus then left them and went away.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”(F)
7 They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”
8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith,(G) why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(H) 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(I) 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.(J)
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(K)
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(L) others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”(M)
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”(N)
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,(O) but by my Father in heaven.(P) 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b](Q) and on this rock I will build my church,(R) and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys(S) of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[d] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[e] loosed in heaven.”(T) 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone(U) that he was the Messiah.
Jesus Predicts His Death(V)
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem(W) and suffer many things(X) at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(Y) and that he must be killed(Z) and on the third day(AA) be raised to life.(AB)
22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”
23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!(AC) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AD) 25 For whoever wants to save their life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.(AE) 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man(AF) is going to come(AG) in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.(AH)
28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
