Erode e Gesù
14 In quel tempo il tetrarca Erode ebbe notizia della fama di Gesù. 2 Egli disse ai suoi cortigiani: «Costui è Giovanni il Battista risuscitato dai morti; per ciò la potenza dei miracoli opera in lui».
Esecuzione di Giovanni Battista
3 Erode aveva arrestato Giovanni e lo aveva fatto incatenare e gettare in prigione per causa di Erodìade, moglie di Filippo suo fratello. 4 Giovanni infatti gli diceva: «Non ti è lecito tenerla!». 5 Benché Erode volesse farlo morire, temeva il popolo perché lo considerava un profeta.
6 Venuto il compleanno di Erode, la figlia di Erodìade danzò in pubblico e piacque tanto a Erode 7 che egli le promise con giuramento di darle tutto quello che avesse domandato. 8 Ed essa, istigata dalla madre, disse: «Dammi qui, su un vassoio, la testa di Giovanni il Battista». 9 Il re ne fu contristato, ma a causa del giuramento e dei commensali ordinò che le fosse data 10 e mandò a decapitare Giovanni nel carcere. 11 La sua testa venne portata su un vassoio e fu data alla fanciulla, ed ella la portò a sua madre. 12 I suoi discepoli andarono a prendere il cadavere, lo seppellirono e andarono a informarne Gesù.
Prima moltiplicazione dei pani
13 Udito ciò, Gesù partì di là su una barca e si ritirò in disparte in un luogo deserto. Ma la folla, saputolo, lo seguì a piedi dalle città. 14 Egli, sceso dalla barca, vide una grande folla e sentì compassione per loro e guarì i loro malati.
15 Sul far della sera, gli si accostarono i discepoli e gli dissero: «Il luogo è deserto ed è ormai tardi; congeda la folla perché vada nei villaggi a comprarsi da mangiare». 16 Ma Gesù rispose: «Non occorre che vadano; date loro voi stessi da mangiare». 17 Gli risposero: «Non abbiamo che cinque pani e due pesci!». 18 Ed egli disse: «Portatemeli qua». 19 E dopo aver ordinato alla folla di sedersi sull'erba, prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, alzati gli occhi al cielo, pronunziò la benedizione, spezzò i pani e li diede ai discepoli e i discepoli li distribuirono alla folla. 20 Tutti mangiarono e furono saziati; e portarono via dodici ceste piene di pezzi avanzati. 21 Quelli che avevano mangiato erano circa cinquemila uomini, senza contare le donne e i bambini.
Gesù cammina sulle acque e Pietro con lui
22 Subito dopo ordinò ai discepoli di salire sulla barca e di precederlo sull'altra sponda, mentre egli avrebbe congedato la folla. 23 Congedata la folla, salì sul monte, solo, a pregare. Venuta la sera, egli se ne stava ancora solo lassù.
24 La barca intanto distava gia qualche miglio da terra ed era agitata dalle onde, a causa del vento contrario. 25 Verso la fine della notte egli venne verso di loro camminando sul mare. 26 I discepoli, a vederlo camminare sul mare, furono turbati e dissero: «E' un fantasma» e si misero a gridare dalla paura. 27 Ma subito Gesù parlò loro: «Coraggio, sono io, non abbiate paura». 28 Pietro gli disse: «Signore, se sei tu, comanda che io venga da te sulle acque». 29 Ed egli disse: «Vieni!». Pietro, scendendo dalla barca, si mise a camminare sulle acque e andò verso Gesù. 30 Ma per la violenza del vento, s'impaurì e, cominciando ad affondare, gridò: «Signore, salvami!». 31 E subito Gesù stese la mano, lo afferrò e gli disse: «Uomo di poca fede, perché hai dubitato?».
32 Appena saliti sulla barca, il vento cessò. 33 Quelli che erano sulla barca gli si prostrarono davanti, esclamando: «Tu sei veramente il Figlio di Dio!».
Guarigioni nel paese di Genèsaret
34 Compiuta la traversata, approdarono a Genèsaret. 35 E la gente del luogo, riconosciuto Gesù, diffuse la notizia in tutta la regione; gli portarono tutti i malati, 36 e lo pregavano di poter toccare almeno l'orlo del suo mantello. E quanti lo toccavano guarivano.

14 (A)In quel tempo Erode il tetrarca[a] udì la fama di Gesù 2 e disse ai suoi servitori: «Costui è Giovanni il battista! Egli è risuscitato dai morti; perciò agiscono in lui le potenze miracolose».
3 Poiché Erode aveva arrestato Giovanni, lo aveva incatenato e messo in prigione a motivo di Erodiade, moglie di Filippo suo fratello; 4 Giovanni infatti gli diceva: «Non ti è lecito averla». 5 E benché desiderasse farlo morire, temeva la folla, perché lo considerava un profeta. 6 Giunto il compleanno[b] di Erode, la figlia di Erodiade ballò nel convito[c] e piacque a Erode; 7 ed egli promise con giuramento di darle tutto quello che avrebbe richiesto. 8 Ella, spintavi da sua madre, disse: «Dammi qui, su un piatto, la testa di Giovanni il battista». 9 Il re, sebbene rattristato, a motivo[d] dei giuramenti e degli invitati comandò che le fosse data, 10 e mandò a decapitare Giovanni in prigione. 11 La sua testa fu portata su un piatto e data alla fanciulla, che la portò a sua madre. 12 E i suoi discepoli andarono a prenderne il corpo[e] e lo seppellirono; poi vennero a informare Gesù.
Moltiplicazione dei pani per cinquemila uomini
13 (B)Udito ciò, Gesù si ritirò di là in barca verso un luogo deserto, in disparte; le folle, saputolo, lo seguirono a piedi dalle città. 14 [Gesù,] smontato dalla barca, vide una gran folla; ne ebbe compassione e ne guarì gli ammalati.
15 Facendosi sera, i [suoi] discepoli si avvicinarono a lui e gli dissero: «Il luogo è deserto e l’ora è già passata; congeda la folla, affinché possa andare nei villaggi a comprarsi da mangiare». 16 Ma {Gesù} disse loro: «Non hanno bisogno di andarsene; date loro voi da mangiare!» 17 Essi gli risposero: «Non abbiamo qui altro che cinque pani e due pesci». 18 Egli disse: «Portatemeli qua». 19 Dopo aver ordinato alla folla di accomodarsi sull’erba, prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, alzati gli occhi verso il cielo, pronunciò la benedizione; poi, spezzati i pani, li diede ai discepoli e i discepoli alla folla. 20 Tutti mangiarono e furono sazi; e si raccolsero, dei pezzi avanzati, dodici ceste piene. 21 E quelli che avevano mangiato erano circa cinquemila uomini, oltre alle donne e ai bambini.
Gesù cammina sul mare; guarigioni a Gennesaret
22 (C)Subito dopo, [Gesù] obbligò i discepoli[f] a salire sulla barca e a precederlo sull’altra riva, mentre egli avrebbe congedato la folla. 23 Dopo aver congedato la folla, salì sul monte in disparte a pregare. E, venuta la sera, rimase là da solo.
24 Frattanto la barca, già di molti stadi[g] lontana da terra, era sbattuta dalle onde perché il vento era contrario. 25 Ma alla quarta vigilia[h] della notte [Gesù] andò verso di loro, camminando sul mare. 26 E i discepoli, vedendolo camminare sul mare, si turbarono e dissero: «È un fantasma!» E dalla paura gridarono. 27 Ma subito {Gesù} parlò loro e disse: «Coraggio, sono io[i]; non abbiate paura!» 28 Pietro gli rispose: «Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venire da te sull’acqua». 29 Egli disse: «Vieni!» E Pietro, sceso dalla barca, camminò sull’acqua e andò verso[j] Gesù. 30 Ma vedendo il vento {forte} ebbe paura e, cominciando ad affondare, gridò: «Signore, salvami!» 31 Subito Gesù, stesa la mano, lo afferrò e gli disse: «Uomo di poca fede, perché hai dubitato?» 32 E, quando furono saliti sulla barca, il vento si calmò. 33 Allora quelli che erano nella barca [vennero e] lo adorarono, dicendo: «Veramente tu sei Figlio di Dio!»
34 Passati all’altra riva, vennero nel paese di Gennesaret[k]. 35 E la gente di quel luogo, riconosciuto Gesù, diffuse la notizia per tutta la regione circostante, e gli presentarono tutti i malati 36 e lo pregavano che lasciasse loro toccare almeno il lembo della sua veste; e tutti quelli che lo toccarono furono guariti.

2 e disse ai suoi servi: «Costui è Giovanni Battista; egli è risuscitato dai morti e perciò le potenze soprannaturali operano in lui».
3 Erode infatti, aveva arrestato Giovanni, lo aveva incatenato e messo in prigione, a causa di Erodiade, moglie di suo fratello Filippo.
4 Perché Giovanni gli diceva: «Non ti è lecito di convivere con lei!».
5 E, pur volendo farlo morire, egli temeva il popolo, che lo riteneva un profeta.
6 Ora, mentre si celebrava il compleanno di Erode, la figlia di Erodiade danzò in sua presenza e piacque a Erode,
7 tanto che egli le promise con giuramento di darle tutto ciò che gli avesse chiesto.
8 Ed ella, istigata da sua madre, disse: «Dammi qui, su un piatto, la testa di Giovanni Battista».
9 Il re ne fu contristato, ma a causa del giuramento e per riguardo degli invitati che erano con lui a tavola, comandò che le fosse data.
10 Cosí mandò a far decapitare Giovanni Battista in prigione;
11 e la sua testa fu portata su un piatto e data alla fanciulla; ed ella la portò a sua madre.
12 Poi vennero i suoi discepoli, presero il corpo e lo seppellirono; in seguito essi andarono a riferire l'accaduto a Gesú.
13 Quando Gesú ebbe udito ciò, partí di là su una barca e si ritirò in disparte, in un luogo deserto. E le folle, saputolo, lo seguirono a piedi dalle città.
14 E Gesú, smontato dalla barca, vide una grande folla e ne ebbe compassione, e ne guarí gli infermi.
15 Poi, facendosi sera, i suoi discepoli gli si accostarono, e gli dissero: «Questo luogo è deserto, ed è già tardi; licenzia dunque le folle affinché vadano per i villaggi a comprarsi da mangiare».
16 Ma Gesú disse loro: «Non è necessario che se ne vadano, date voi a loro da mangiare».
17 Ed essi gli dissero: «Noi non abbiamo qui altro che cinque pani e due pesci».
18 Ed egli disse: «Portatemeli qua».
19 Comandò quindi che le folle si sedessero sull'erba; poi prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, alzati gli occhi al cielo, li benedisse; spezzò i pani e li diede ai discepoli e i discepoli, alle folle.
20 E tutti mangiarono e furono saziati poi i discepoli raccolsero i pezzi avanzati in dodici ceste piene.
21 Ora, coloro che avevano mangiato erano circa cinquemila uomini, senza contare le donne e i bambini.
22 Subito dopo Gesú costrinse i suoi discepoli a salire sulla barca e a precederlo all'altra riva, mentre egli licenziava le folle.
23 Dopo averle congedate, salí sul monte in disparte per pregare. E, fattosi sera, era là tutto solo.
24 La barca intanto si trovava al largo, in mezzo al mare, ed era sbattuta dalle onde perché il vento era contrario.
25 Alla quarta vigilia, della notte, Gesú andò verso di loro, camminando sul mare.
26 I discepoli, vedendolo camminare sul mare, si turbarono e dissero: «è un fantasma!». E si misero a gridare dalla paura;
27 ma subito Gesú parlò loro, dicendo: «Rassicuratevi; sono io, non temete!».
28 E Pietro, rispondendogli disse: «Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venire da te sulle acque».
29 Egli disse: «Vieni!» E Pietro, sceso dalla barca, camminò sulle acque, per venire da Gesú.
30 Ma, vedendo il vento forte, ebbe paura e, cominciando ad affondare, gridò dicendo: «Signore, salvami!».
31 E subito Gesú stese la mano, lo prese e gli disse: «O uomo di poca fede, perché hai dubitato?».
32 Poi, quando salirono in barca, il vento si acquetò.
33 Allora quelli che erano nella barca vennero e l'adorarono, dicendo: «Veramente tu sei il Figlio di Dio!».
34 Poi, essendo passati all'altra riva, vennero nella regione di Gennesaret.
35 E gli uomini di quel luogo, avendolo riconosciuto, diffusero la notizia per tutta la regione circostante; e gli presentarono tutti i malati;
36 e lo pregarono che potessero toccare almeno il lembo della sua veste, e tutti quelli che lo toccarono furono perfettamente guariti.

John the Baptist Beheaded(A)
14 At that time Herod(B) the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,(C) 2 and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist;(D) he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison(E) because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,(F) 4 for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”(G) 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.(H)
6 On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded(I) in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it.(J) Then they went and told Jesus.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(K)(L)
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them(M) and healed their sick.(N)
15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 “We have here only five loaves(O) of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(P) Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Jesus Walks on the Water(Q)(R)
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.(S) Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,”(T) they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage!(U) It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(V)
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,”(W) he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”(X)
34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak,(Y) and all who touched it were healed.

12 And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
13 When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
18 He said, Bring them hither to me.
19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
34 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;
36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
