14 In quel tempo Erode, il tetrarca, udí della fama di Gesú,
2 e disse ai suoi servi: «Costui è Giovanni Battista; egli è risuscitato dai morti e perciò le potenze soprannaturali operano in lui».
3 Erode infatti, aveva arrestato Giovanni, lo aveva incatenato e messo in prigione, a causa di Erodiade, moglie di suo fratello Filippo.
4 Perché Giovanni gli diceva: «Non ti è lecito di convivere con lei!».
5 E, pur volendo farlo morire, egli temeva il popolo, che lo riteneva un profeta.
6 Ora, mentre si celebrava il compleanno di Erode, la figlia di Erodiade danzò in sua presenza e piacque a Erode,
7 tanto che egli le promise con giuramento di darle tutto ciò che gli avesse chiesto.
8 Ed ella, istigata da sua madre, disse: «Dammi qui, su un piatto, la testa di Giovanni Battista».
9 Il re ne fu contristato, ma a causa del giuramento e per riguardo degli invitati che erano con lui a tavola, comandò che le fosse data.
10 Cosí mandò a far decapitare Giovanni Battista in prigione;
11 e la sua testa fu portata su un piatto e data alla fanciulla; ed ella la portò a sua madre.
12 Poi vennero i suoi discepoli, presero il corpo e lo seppellirono; in seguito essi andarono a riferire l'accaduto a Gesú.
13 Quando Gesú ebbe udito ciò, partí di là su una barca e si ritirò in disparte, in un luogo deserto. E le folle, saputolo, lo seguirono a piedi dalle città.
14 E Gesú, smontato dalla barca, vide una grande folla e ne ebbe compassione, e ne guarí gli infermi.
15 Poi, facendosi sera, i suoi discepoli gli si accostarono, e gli dissero: «Questo luogo è deserto, ed è già tardi; licenzia dunque le folle affinché vadano per i villaggi a comprarsi da mangiare».
16 Ma Gesú disse loro: «Non è necessario che se ne vadano, date voi a loro da mangiare».
17 Ed essi gli dissero: «Noi non abbiamo qui altro che cinque pani e due pesci».
18 Ed egli disse: «Portatemeli qua».
19 Comandò quindi che le folle si sedessero sull'erba; poi prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, alzati gli occhi al cielo, li benedisse; spezzò i pani e li diede ai discepoli e i discepoli, alle folle.
20 E tutti mangiarono e furono saziati poi i discepoli raccolsero i pezzi avanzati in dodici ceste piene.
21 Ora, coloro che avevano mangiato erano circa cinquemila uomini, senza contare le donne e i bambini.
22 Subito dopo Gesú costrinse i suoi discepoli a salire sulla barca e a precederlo all'altra riva, mentre egli licenziava le folle.
23 Dopo averle congedate, salí sul monte in disparte per pregare. E, fattosi sera, era là tutto solo.
24 La barca intanto si trovava al largo, in mezzo al mare, ed era sbattuta dalle onde perché il vento era contrario.
25 Alla quarta vigilia, della notte, Gesú andò verso di loro, camminando sul mare.
26 I discepoli, vedendolo camminare sul mare, si turbarono e dissero: «è un fantasma!». E si misero a gridare dalla paura;
27 ma subito Gesú parlò loro, dicendo: «Rassicuratevi; sono io, non temete!».
28 E Pietro, rispondendogli disse: «Signore, se sei tu, comandami di venire da te sulle acque».
29 Egli disse: «Vieni!» E Pietro, sceso dalla barca, camminò sulle acque, per venire da Gesú.
30 Ma, vedendo il vento forte, ebbe paura e, cominciando ad affondare, gridò dicendo: «Signore, salvami!».
31 E subito Gesú stese la mano, lo prese e gli disse: «O uomo di poca fede, perché hai dubitato?».
32 Poi, quando salirono in barca, il vento si acquetò.
33 Allora quelli che erano nella barca vennero e l'adorarono, dicendo: «Veramente tu sei il Figlio di Dio!».
34 Poi, essendo passati all'altra riva, vennero nella regione di Gennesaret.
35 E gli uomini di quel luogo, avendolo riconosciuto, diffusero la notizia per tutta la regione circostante; e gli presentarono tutti i malati;
36 e lo pregarono che potessero toccare almeno il lembo della sua veste, e tutti quelli che lo toccarono furono perfettamente guariti.

14 At that time (B)Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus 2 and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.” 3 (C)For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. 4 Because John had said to him, (D)“It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, (E)because they counted him as a prophet.
6 But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. 7 Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.
8 So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.”
9 And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her. 10 So he sent and had John beheaded in prison. 11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12 Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
Feeding the Five Thousand(F)
13 (G)When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He (H)was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. 15 (I)When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.”
16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”
18 He said, “Bring them here to Me.” 19 Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, (J)He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes. 20 So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained. 21 Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Jesus Walks on the Sea(K)
22 Immediately Jesus [a]made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. 23 (L)And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. (M)Now when evening came, He was alone there. 24 But the boat was now [b]in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw Him (N)walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, [c]“Be of good (O)cheer! [d]It is I; do not be afraid.”
28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw [e]that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of (P)little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Then those who were in the boat [f]came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly (Q)You are the Son of God.”
Many Touch Him and Are Made Well(R)
34 (S)When they had crossed over, they came [g]to the land of Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all that surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick, 36 and begged Him that they might only (T)touch the hem of His garment. And (U)as many as touched it were made perfectly well.

Decapitación de Juan el Bautista(A)
14 En aquel tiempo Herodes el tetrarca se enteró de lo que decían de Jesús, 2 y comentó a sus sirvientes: «¡Ese es Juan el Bautista; ha resucitado! Por eso tiene poder para realizar milagros».
3 En efecto, Herodes había arrestado a Juan. Lo había encadenado y metido en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, esposa de su hermano Felipe. 4 Porque Juan había estado diciéndole: «La ley te prohíbe tenerla por esposa». 5 Herodes quería matarlo, pero le tenía miedo a la gente, porque consideraban a Juan como un profeta.
6 En el cumpleaños de Herodes, la hija de Herodías bailó delante de todos; y tanto le agradó a Herodes 7 que le prometió bajo juramento darle cualquier cosa que pidiera. 8 Instigada por su madre, le pidió: «Dame en una bandeja la cabeza de Juan el Bautista».
9 El rey se entristeció, pero, a causa de sus juramentos y en atención a los invitados, ordenó que se le concediera la petición, 10 y mandó decapitar a Juan en la cárcel. 11 Llevaron la cabeza en una bandeja y se la dieron a la muchacha, quien se la entregó a su madre. 12 Luego llegaron los discípulos de Juan, recogieron el cuerpo y le dieron sepultura. Después fueron y avisaron a Jesús.
Jesús alimenta a cinco mil(B)
13 Cuando Jesús recibió la noticia, se retiró él solo en una barca a un lugar solitario. Las multitudes se enteraron y lo siguieron a pie desde los poblados. 14 Cuando Jesús desembarcó y vio a tanta gente, tuvo compasión de ellos y sanó a los que estaban enfermos.
15 Al atardecer se le acercaron sus discípulos y le dijeron:
―Este es un lugar apartado y ya se hace tarde. Despide a la gente, para que vayan a los pueblos y se compren algo de comer.
16 ―No tienen que irse —contestó Jesús—. Dadles vosotros mismos de comer.
17 Ellos objetaron:
―No tenemos aquí más que cinco panes y dos pescados.
18 ―Traédmelos —les dijo Jesús.
19 Y mandó a la gente que se sentara sobre la hierba. Tomó los cinco panes y los dos pescados y, mirando al cielo, los bendijo. Luego partió los panes y se los dio a los discípulos, quienes los repartieron a la gente. 20 Todos comieron hasta quedar satisfechos, y los discípulos recogieron doce canastas llenas de pedazos que sobraron. 21 Los que comieron fueron unos cinco mil hombres, sin contar a las mujeres y a los niños.

22 En seguida Jesús hizo que los discípulos subieran a la barca y se adelantaran al otro lado mientras él despedía a la multitud. 23 Después de despedir a la gente, subió a la montaña para orar a solas. Al anochecer, estaba allí él solo, 24 y la barca ya estaba bastante lejos[a] de la tierra, zarandeada por las olas, porque el viento le era contrario.
25 En la madrugada,[b] Jesús se acercó a ellos caminando sobre el lago. 26 Cuando los discípulos lo vieron caminando sobre el agua, quedaron aterrados.
―¡Es un fantasma! —gritaron de miedo.
27 Pero Jesús les dijo en seguida:
―¡Calmaos! Soy yo. No tengáis miedo.
28 ―Señor, si eres tú —respondió Pedro—, manda que vaya a ti sobre el agua.
29 ―Ven —dijo Jesús.
Pedro bajó de la barca y caminó sobre el agua en dirección a Jesús. 30 Pero, al sentir el viento fuerte, tuvo miedo y comenzó a hundirse. Entonces gritó:
―¡Señor, sálvame!
31 En seguida Jesús le tendió la mano y, sujetándolo, lo reprendió:
―¡Hombre de poca fe! ¿Por qué dudaste?
32 Cuando subieron a la barca, se calmó el viento. 33 Y los que estaban en la barca lo adoraron diciendo:
―Verdaderamente tú eres el Hijo de Dios.
34 Después de cruzar el lago, desembarcaron en Genesaret. 35 Los habitantes de aquel lugar reconocieron a Jesús y divulgaron la noticia por todos los alrededores. Le llevaban todos los enfermos, 36 suplicándole que les permitiera tocar siquiera el borde de su manto, y quienes lo tocaban quedaban sanos.

3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison(E) because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,(F) 4 for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”(G) 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.(H)
6 On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded(I) in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it.(J) Then they went and told Jesus.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(K)(L)
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them(M) and healed their sick.(N)
15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 “We have here only five loaves(O) of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(P) Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Jesus Walks on the Water(Q)(R)
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.(S) Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,”(T) they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage!(U) It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(V)
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,”(W) he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”(X)
34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak,(Y) and all who touched it were healed.
