Il ripudio e il celibato
19 (A)Quando Gesù ebbe finito questi discorsi, partì dalla Galilea e se ne andò nei territori della Giudea che sono oltre il Giordano. 2 Una grande folla lo seguì, e là li guarì.
3 Dei farisei gli si avvicinarono per metterlo alla prova, dicendo[a]: «È lecito mandare via la propria moglie per un motivo qualsiasi?» 4 Ed egli rispose [loro]: «Non avete letto che il Creatore[b], da principio, li creò[c] maschio e femmina[d] e disse: 5 “Perciò l’uomo lascerà il padre e la madre, e si unirà a sua moglie, e i due saranno una sola carne”[e]? 6 Così non sono più due, ma una sola carne; quello dunque che Dio ha unito, l’uomo non lo separi». 7 Essi gli dissero: «Perché dunque Mosè comandò di darle un atto di ripudio e di mandarla via[f]?» 8 Egli disse loro: «Fu per la durezza dei vostri cuori che Mosè vi permise di mandare via le vostre mogli; ma da principio non era così. 9 Ma io vi dico che chiunque manda via sua moglie, quando non sia per motivo di fornicazione, e ne sposa un’altra, commette adulterio [e chi sposa colei che è mandata via commette adulterio]».
10 I {suoi} discepoli gli dissero: «Se tale è la condizione dell’uomo rispetto alla donna, non conviene sposarsi». 11 Ma egli rispose loro: «Non tutti sono capaci di mettere in pratica[g] questa parola, ma soltanto quelli ai quali è dato. 12 Poiché vi sono degli eunuchi che sono tali dalla nascita[h]; vi sono degli eunuchi i quali sono stati fatti tali dagli uomini, e vi sono degli eunuchi i quali si sono fatti eunuchi da sé a motivo del regno dei cieli. Chi può capire, capisca».
Gesù benedice i bambini
13 (B)Allora gli furono presentati dei bambini perché imponesse loro le mani e pregasse; ma i discepoli li sgridavano. 14 Ma Gesù disse: «Lasciate stare i bambini e non impedite loro di venire da me[i], perché il regno dei cieli è di chi è come loro». 15 E, imposte loro le mani, se ne andò via di là.
Il giovane ricco
16 (C)Ed ecco, un tale gli si avvicinò e disse[j]: «Maestro [buono], che devo fare di buono per avere la vita eterna?» 17 Gesù gli rispose: «Perché m’interroghi intorno a ciò che è buono? Uno solo è il buono[k]. Ma se vuoi entrare nella vita, osserva i comandamenti». 18 «Quali?» gli chiese. E Gesù rispose: «Non uccidere, non commettere adulterio, non rubare, non testimoniare il falso. 19 Onora tuo padre e tua madre[l], e ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso[m]». 20 E il giovane a lui: «Tutte queste cose le ho osservate [fin dalla mia giovinezza]; che mi manca ancora?» 21 Gesù gli disse: «Se vuoi essere perfetto, va’, vendi ciò che hai e dàllo ai poveri, e avrai un tesoro nei cieli; poi, vieni e seguimi». 22 Ma il giovane, udita questa parola, se ne andò rattristato, perché aveva molti beni. 23 E Gesù disse ai suoi discepoli: «Io vi dico in verità che difficilmente un ricco entrerà nel regno dei cieli. 24 E ripeto: è più facile per un cammello passare attraverso la cruna di un ago, che per un ricco entrare nel regno di Dio». 25 I [suoi] discepoli, udito questo, furono sbigottiti e dicevano: «Chi dunque può essere salvato?» 26 Gesù, fissando lo sguardo su di loro, disse: «Agli uomini questo è impossibile; ma a Dio ogni cosa è possibile».
27 (D)Allora Pietro, replicando, gli disse: «Ecco, noi abbiamo lasciato ogni cosa e ti abbiamo seguito; che ne avremo dunque?» 28 E Gesù disse loro: «Io vi dico in verità che nella nuova creazione, quando il Figlio dell’uomo sarà seduto sul trono della sua gloria, anche voi che mi avete seguito sarete seduti su dodici troni a giudicare le dodici tribù d’Israele. 29 E chiunque avrà lasciato case, o fratelli, o sorelle, o padre, o madre, [o moglie,] o figli, o campi a causa del mio nome, ne riceverà cento volte tanto ed erediterà la vita eterna. 30 Ma molti primi saranno ultimi e gli ultimi, primi.

Marriage and Divorce(A)
19 Now it came to pass, (B)when Jesus had finished these sayings, that He departed from Galilee and came to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. 2 (C)And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them there.
3 The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”
4 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who [a]made them at the beginning (D)‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, (E)‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and (F)the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”
7 They said to Him, (G)“Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?”
8 He said to them, “Moses, because of the (H)hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your (I)wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 (J)And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for [b]sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”
10 His disciples said to Him, (K)“If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”
Jesus Teaches on Celibacy
11 But He said to them, (L)“All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given: 12 For there are [c]eunuchs who were born thus from their mother’s womb, and (M)there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He who is able to accept it, let him accept it.”

13 (O)Then little children were brought to Him that He might put His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for (P)of such is the kingdom of heaven.” 15 And He laid His hands on them and departed from there.
Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler(Q)
16 (R)Now behold, one came and said to Him, (S)“Good[d] Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”
17 So He said to him, [e]“Why do you call Me good? [f]No one is (T)good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, (U)keep the commandments.”
18 He said to Him, “Which ones?”
Jesus said, (V)“‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ 19 (W)‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, (X)‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
20 The young man said to Him, “All these things I have (Y)kept [g]from my youth. What do I still lack?”
21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, (Z)go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
With God All Things Are Possible(AA)
23 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that (AB)it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
25 When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”
26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but (AC)with God all things are possible.”
27 Then Peter answered and said to Him, “See, (AD)we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?”
28 So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, (AE)you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 (AF)And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother [h]or wife or children or [i]lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. 30 (AG)But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
