Divorce

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[a](A) 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(B)

Oaths

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath,(C) but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’(D) 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all:(E) either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;(F) 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.(G) 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’;(H) anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[b](I)

Eye for Eye

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[c](J) 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.(K) 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.(L)

31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:

35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Jesus Forbids Oaths

33 “Again you have heard that (D)it was said to those of [b]old, (E)‘You shall not swear falsely, but (F)shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, (G)do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is (H)God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of (I)the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 (J)But let [c]your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

Go the Second Mile(K)

38 “You have heard that it was said, (L)‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 (M)But I tell you not to resist an evil person. (N)But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41 And whoever (O)compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and (P)from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

Oaths

33 “Again (E)you have heard that it was said to those of old, (F)‘You shall not swear falsely, but (G)shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, (H)Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for (I)it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is (J)the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; (K)anything more than this comes from evil.[a]

31 “Now it was said, ‘(A)Whoever sends his wife away is to give her a certificate of divorce’; 32 (B)but I say to you that everyone who [a]divorces his wife, except for the reason of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a [b]divorced woman commits adultery.

33 “Again, (C)you have heard that [c]the ancients were told, ‘[d](D)You shall not [e]make false vows, but shall fulfill your [f]vows to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, (E)take no oath at all, neither by heaven, for it is (F)the throne of God, 35 nor by the earth, for it is the (G)footstool of His feet, nor [g]by Jerusalem, for it is (H)the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you take an oath by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. 37 But make sure your statement is, ‘[h]Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is [i]of (I)evil origin.

38 (J)You have heard that it was said, ‘(K)Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, do not show opposition against an evil person; but (L)whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other toward him also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your [j]tunic, let him have your [k]cloak also. 41 Whoever [l]forces you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 (M)Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.
