유대 지도자들이 예수를 함정에 빠뜨리려 하다
(막 12:13-17; 눅 20:20-26)
15 바리새파 사람들은 예수께서 사람들을 가르치고 계신 그 자리를 떠났다. 그들은 예수께서 틀린 말을 할 때를 기다렸다가, 그것을 트집잡아 예수를 잡기로 하였다. 16 그들은 자기네 제자들을 헤롯 당[a]원들과 함께 예수께 보냈다. 그 사람들이 와서 말하였다. “선생님, 우리는 선생님께서 정직한 분이심을 압니다. 선생님께서는 참 하나님의 길을 가르치십니다. 선생님께서는 사람을 겉모습으로 판단하지 않기 때문에, 어느 누구에게도 휘둘리지 않으십니다. 17 선생님께 여쭤 보고 싶은 것이 하나 있습니다. 시저에게 세금을 바치는 것이 옳습니까, 옳지 않습니까?”
18 예수께서는 이 사람들의 악한 생각을 아시고 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 위선자들이다. 어찌하여 내 속을 떠 보려고 하느냐? 19 너희가 세금으로 내는 돈을 보여 다오.” 그들은 예수께 데나리온[b] 하나를 보여 드렸다. 20 예수께서 물으셨다. “여기에 누구의 얼굴이 새겨져 있느냐? 그리고 누구의 이름이 새겨져 있느냐?”
21 사람들이 대답하였다. “시저의 얼굴과 이름입니다.”
그러자 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “시저의 것은 시저에게 주어라. 그리고 하나님의 것은 하나님께 드려라.”

Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar(A)
15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians.(B) “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax[a](C) to Caesar or not?”
18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”
21 “Caesar’s,” they replied.
Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(D) and to God what is God’s.”
22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.(E)
