7 As John’s(A) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(B) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(C) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[b] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(F) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(G) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(H)
16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating(I) nor drinking,(J) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(K) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
Woe on Unrepentant Towns(L)
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(M) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(N) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(O) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(P) 23 And you, Capernaum,(Q) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[c](R) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(S)
The Father Revealed in the Son(T)
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(U) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(V) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me(W) by my Father.(X) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(Y)
28 “Come to me,(Z) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(AA) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(AB) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(AC) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(AD)

7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Jesus’ Tribute to John

16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call out to the other children, 17 and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not [h]mourn.’ 18 For John came neither (G)eating nor (H)drinking, and they say, ‘(I)He has a demon!’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a [i]heavy drinker, (J)a friend of tax collectors and [j]sinners!’ And yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
The Unrepenting Cities
20 Then He began to reprimand the cities in which most of His [k](K)miracles were done, because they did not repent. 21 “(L)Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, (M)Bethsaida! For if the [l]miracles that occurred in you had occurred in (N)Tyre and (O)Sidon, they would have repented long ago in [m](P)sackcloth and ashes. 22 Nevertheless I say to you, (Q)it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on (R)the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, (S)Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be (T)brought down to (U)Hades! For if the [n]miracles that occurred in you had occurred in (V)Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 Nevertheless I say to you that (W)it will be more tolerable for the land of (X)Sodom on the day of judgment, than for you.”
Come to Me
25 [o](Y)At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, (Z)Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that (AA)You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to infants. 26 Yes, (AB)Father, for this way was well pleasing in Your sight. 27 (AC)All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father (AD)except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son determines to reveal Him.
28 “(AE)Come to Me, all [p]who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and (AF)learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and (AG)you will find [q]rest for your souls. 30 For (AH)My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.”

Jesus vittnar om Johannes
7 (A) När de hade gått, började Jesus tala till folket om Johannes: "Vad gick ni ut i öknen för att se? Ett strå[a] som vajar för vinden? 8 Om inte, vad gick ni ut för att se? En man klädd i fina kläder? Nej, de som har fina kläder finns i kungapalatsen. 9 Så vad gick ni ut för att se? En profet? Ja, jag säger er: en som är mer än profet. 10 Det är om honom det står skrivet: Se, jag sänder min budbärare framför dig, och han ska bereda vägen för dig.[b] 11 (B) Jag säger er sanningen: Bland dem som fötts av kvinnor har ingen trätt fram som är större än Johannes Döparen. Men den minste i himmelriket är större än han.
12 Och från Johannes Döparens dagar ända till nu är himmelriket utsatt för våld, och våldsmän förtrycker det.[c] 13 Alla profeterna och lagen har profeterat fram till Johannes, 14 (C) och om ni vill ta emot det – han är den Elia som skulle komma. 15 Hör, du som har öron!
16 (D) Vad ska jag likna det här släktet vid? De liknar barn som sitter på torgen och ropar till andra barn: 17 Vi spelade flöjt[d] för er men ni dansade inte, vi sjöng sorgesång men ni grät inte. 18 (E) Johannes kom, och han varken åt eller drack, och då säger man: Han har en ond ande. 19 (F) Människosonen kom, och han äter och dricker, och då säger man: Se vilken frossare och drinkare, en vän till tullindrivare och syndare! Men Visheten har fått rätt av sina barn[e]."

20 Sedan började Jesus gå till rätta med de städer där han hade gjort så många av sina kraftgärningar, eftersom de inte hade omvänt sig: 21 (G) "Ve dig, Korasin! Ve dig, Betsaida! För om kraftgärningarna som gjorts hos er hade gjorts i Tyrus och Sidon[f], skulle de för länge sedan ha omvänt sig i säck och aska[g]. 22 Jag säger er: Tyrus och Sidon ska få det lindrigare på domens dag än ni.
23 Och du, Kapernaum, ska du kanske bli upphöjd till himlen? Nej, du ska ner i helvetet[h]. För om kraftgärningarna som gjorts i dig hade gjorts i Sodom[i], skulle det ha stått än i dag. 24 (H) Men jag säger er: Sodoms land ska få det lindrigare på domens dag än du."
Jesus är Guds vishet
25 (I) Vid den tiden sade Jesus: "Jag prisar dig Far, himlens och jordens Herre, för att du har dolt detta för de visa och kloka och uppenbarat det för de små. 26 Ja, Far, så var din goda vilja. 27 (J) Allt har min Far överlämnat till mig. Och ingen känner Sonen utom Fadern, inte heller känner någon Fadern utom Sonen och den som Sonen vill uppenbara honom för.
28 (K) Kom till mig, alla ni som arbetar[j] och är tyngda av bördor, så ska jag ge er vila. 29 (L) Ta på er mitt ok och lär av mig, för jag är mild och ödmjuk i hjärtat. Då ska ni finna ro för era själar, 30 (M) för mitt ok är milt och min börda är lätt."
