²⁷ All things have been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son desires^[a] to reveal him.^(A)

³⁵ “I am^(A) the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to me^(B) will ever be hungry,^(C) and no one who believes in me^(D) will ever be thirsty^(E) again. ³⁶ But as I told you, you’ve seen me,^[a] and yet you do not believe. ³⁷ Everyone the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never cast out.^{(F) 38} For I have come down from heaven,^(G) not to do my own will, but the will of him^(H) who sent me. ³⁹ This is the will of him who sent me: that I should lose none of those he has given me but should raise^(I) them up on the last day.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

⁶⁰ Therefore, when many of his disciples heard this, they said, “This teaching is hard. Who can accept^[a] it?”

⁶¹ Jesus, knowing in himself^(A) that his disciples were grumbling about this, asked them, “Does this offend you? ⁶² Then what if you were to observe the Son of Man^(B) ascending^(C) to where he was before? ⁶³ The Spirit^(D) is the one who gives life. The flesh doesn’t help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. ⁶⁴ But there are some among you who don’t believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning^(E) those who did not^[b] believe and the one who would betray^(F) him.) ⁶⁵ He said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me^(G) unless it is granted to him by the Father.”

²⁴ The Jews surrounded him and asked, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense?^[a] If you are the Messiah,^(A) tell us plainly.”^[b](B)

²⁵ “I did tell you and you don’t believe,” Jesus answered them. “The works^(C) that I do in my Father’s name testify about me. ²⁶ But you don’t believe because you are not of my sheep.^{[c](D) 27} My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me. ²⁸ I give them eternal life,^(E) and they will never perish.^(F) No one will snatch^(G) them out of my hand.

Jesus Prays for Himself

17 Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son^(A) may glorify you,^{(B) 2} since you gave him authority over all people,^[a](C) so that he may give eternal life^(D) to everyone you have given him.^(E)
