The Temptation of Jesus
4 (A)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness (B)to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had (C)fasted forty days and forty nights, He [a]then became hungry. 3 And (D)the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the (E)Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘(F)Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil *took Him into (G)the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written,
‘(H)He will command His angels concerning You’;
and
‘On their hands they will bear You up,
So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him, “[b]On the other hand, it is written, ‘(I)You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
8 (J)Again, the devil *took Him to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; 9 and he said to Him, “(K)All these things I will give You, if You fall down and [c]worship me.” 10 Then Jesus *said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘(L)You shall worship the Lord your God, and [d]serve Him only.’” 11 Then the devil *left Him; and behold, (M)angels came and began to minister to Him.

A Father’s Discipline
4 (A)You have not yet resisted [a](B)to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; 5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,
“(C)My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
Nor (D)faint when you are reproved by Him;
6 (E)For those (F)whom the Lord loves He disciplines,
And He scourges every son whom He receives.”
7 It is for discipline that you endure; (G)God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 But if you are without discipline, (H)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we had [b]earthly fathers to discipline us, and we (I)respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to (J)the Father of [c]spirits, and (K)live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, (L)so that we may share His holiness. 11 All discipline (M)for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the (N)peaceful fruit of righteousness.
12 Therefore, [d](O)strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, 13 and (P)make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather (Q)be healed.
14 (R)Pursue peace with all men, and the (S)sanctification without which no one will (T)see the Lord.
