³⁶ When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,^(A) because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.^(B)

³⁴ When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.^(A) So he began teaching them many things.

¹⁷ to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”^(A)

³ You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock.^{(A) 4} You have not strengthened the weak or healed^(B) the sick or bound up^(C) the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.^{(D) 5} So they were scattered because there was no shepherd,^(E) and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals.^{(F) 6} My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill.^(G) They were scattered^(H) over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them.^(I)

³² Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people;^(A) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”

²⁴ He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”^(A)
