³ At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”^(A)

⁶⁵ Then the high priest tore his clothes^(A) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.

²¹ The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”^(A)

¹⁶ anyone who blasphemes^(A) the name of the Lord is to be put to death.^(B) The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native-born, when they blaspheme the Name they are to be put to death.

³³ “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”^(A)

³⁴ Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law,^(B) ‘I have said you are “gods”’^[a]?^{(C) 35} If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God^(D) came—and Scripture cannot be set aside^(E)— ³⁶ what about the one whom the Father set apart^(F) as his very own^(G) and sent into the world?^(H) Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?^(I)

⁶⁴ “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.^(A)

⁶ Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, ⁷ “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”^(A)

¹¹ Then they secretly^(A) persuaded some men to say, “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.”^(B)

¹² So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin.^{(C) 13} They produced false witnesses,^(D) who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place^(E) and against the law.

³⁹ When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet,^(A) he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”

⁴⁰ Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”

“Tell me, teacher,” he said.
