⁹ For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

⁹ Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything,^(A) to try to please them, not to talk back to them,

²² Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.

³⁵ “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.^(A) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

³⁶ All the people were amazed^(B) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority^(C) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!”

³⁹ So he bent over her and rebuked^(A) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

³⁹ He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

⁴⁰ He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”^(A)

⁴¹ They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

¹⁷ “Or if I bring a sword^(A) against that country and say, ‘Let the sword pass throughout the land,’ and I kill its people and their animals,^{(B) 18} as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, even if these three men were in it, they could not save their own sons or daughters. They alone would be saved.

¹⁹ “Or if I send a plague into that land and pour out my wrath^(C) on it through bloodshed,^(D) killing its people and their animals,^{(E) 20} as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, even if Noah, Daniel and Job were in it, they could save neither son nor daughter. They would save only themselves by their righteousness.^(F)

²¹ “For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem my four dreadful judgments^(G)—sword^(H) and famine^(I) and wild beasts and plague^(J)—to kill its men and their animals!^(K)
