²¹ Another of his disciples said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

⁵⁹ To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”^{(A) 60} And Jesus^[a] said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” ⁶¹ Another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” ⁶² And Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

⁶ “All the days that they separate themselves to the Lord they shall not go near a corpse.^{(A) 7} Even if their father or mother, brother or sister, should die, they may not defile themselves, because their consecration to God is upon the head.

¹¹ He shall not go where there is a dead body; he shall not defile himself even for his father or mother.^{(A) 12} He shall not go outside the sanctuary and thus profane the sanctuary of his God, for the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is upon him: I am the Lord.^(B)

²⁹ And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or^[a] children or fields for my name’s sake will receive a hundredfold^[b] and will inherit eternal life.

²⁰ He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” Then Elijah^[a] said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?”^{(A) 21} He returned from following him, took the yoke of oxen, and slaughtered them; using the equipment from the oxen, he boiled their flesh and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out and followed Elijah and became his servant.^(B)

² “Thus says the Lord of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s house.”

¹⁶ From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view;^[a] even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view,^[b] we no longer know him in that way.^(A)
