^19 (A)Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.”

³³ But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”

^34 (A)Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

³⁶ Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?”

Jesus answered him, “Where I ^(A)am going you cannot follow Me now, but ^(B)you shall follow Me afterward.”

³⁷ Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will ^(C)lay down my life for Your sake.”

³⁸ Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not ^(D)crow till you have denied Me three times.

³³ So likewise, whoever of you ^(A)does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.

³² So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, ^(A)and there is no other but He. ³³ And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, ^[a]with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, ^(B)is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

³⁴ Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”

^(C)But after that no one dared question Him.

^20 (A)Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the ^[a]disputer of this age? ^(B)Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

Leaving All to Follow Christ^(A)

²⁵ Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, ^26 (B)“If anyone comes to Me ^(C)and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, ^(D)yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. ²⁷ And ^(E)whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

The Cost of Discipleship^(A)

^57 (B)Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”

⁵⁸ And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man ^(C)has nowhere to lay His head.”

^59 (D)Then He said to another, “Follow Me.”

But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”

⁶⁰ Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”

⁶ this Ezra came up from Babylon; and he was ^(A)a skilled scribe in the Law of Moses, which the Lord God of Israel had given. The king granted him all his request, ^(B)according to the hand of the Lord his God upon him.
