³ And ^(A)the tempter came and said to him, “If you are ^(B)the Son of God, command ^(C)these stones to become loaves of bread.”

⁵ For this reason, ^(A)when I could bear it no longer, ^(B)I sent to learn about your faith, ^(C)for fear that somehow ^(D)the tempter had tempted you and ^(E)our labor would be in vain.

The Fall

3 Now ^(A)the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You^[a] shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” ² And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, ³ but God said, ^(B)‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” ^4 (C)But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. ⁵ For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

⁴ Now the ^(A)rabble that was among them had a strong craving. And the people of Israel also ^(B)wept again and said, ^(C)“Oh that we had meat to eat! ^5 (D)We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. ⁶ But now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.”

¹⁰ Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, ^(A)that you may be tested, and for ^(B)ten days ^(C)you will have tribulation. ^(D)Be faithful ^(E)unto death, and I will give you ^(F)the crown of life.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

³¹ “Simon, Simon, behold, ^(A)Satan demanded to have you,^{[a] (B)}that he might sift you like wheat, ³² but ^(C)I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, ^(D)strengthen your brothers.”

⁹ And ^(A)the great dragon was thrown down, ^(B)that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, ^(C)the deceiver of the whole world—^(D)he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. ¹⁰ And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now ^(E)the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers^[a] has been thrown down, ^(F)who accuses them day and night before our God. ¹¹ And ^(G)they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for ^(H)they loved not their lives ^(I)even unto death.

¹⁷ and behold, ^(A)a voice from heaven said, ^(B)“This is my beloved Son,^[a] with whom I am well pleased.”
