¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, ^(A)Satan! For ^(B)it is written,

¹³ It is ^(A)the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and ^(B)by his name you shall swear. ¹⁴ You shall not ^(C)go after other gods, ^(D)the gods of the peoples who are around you—

^20 (A)You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall serve him and ^(B)hold fast to him, and ^(C)by his name you shall swear.

Choose Whom You Will Serve

^14 (A)“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. ^(B)Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.

⁸ And Jesus answered him, ^(A)“It is written,

Samuel Judges Israel

³ And Samuel said to all the house of Israel, ^(A)“If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart, then ^(B)put away the foreign gods and the ^(C)Ashtaroth from among you and ^(D)direct your heart to the Lord ^(E)and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.”

⁷ Submit yourselves therefore to God. ^(A)Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

^9 (A)Resist him, ^(B)firm in your faith, knowing that ^(C)the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

²³ But he turned and said to Peter, ^(A)“Get behind me, Satan! You are ^(B)a hindrance^[a] to me. For you ^(C)are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
