¹² When they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers,

Addressing the Sanhedrin

⁵ And it came to pass, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes, ⁶ as well as ^(A)Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem. ⁷ And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, ^(B)“By what power or by what name have you done this?”

^8 (C)Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: ⁹ If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, ¹⁰ let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, ^(D)that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, ^(E)whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. ¹¹ This is the ^(F)‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ ^12 (G)Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

The Name of Jesus Forbidden

¹³ Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, ^(H)and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. ¹⁴ And seeing the man who had been healed ^(I)standing with them, they could say nothing against it. ¹⁵ But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, ¹⁶ saying, ^(J)“What shall we do to these men? For, indeed, that a ^[a]notable miracle has been done through them is ^(K)evident^[b] to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. ¹⁷ But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us severely threaten them, that from now on they speak to no man in this name.”

^18 (L)So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. ¹⁹ But Peter and John answered and said to them, ^(M)“Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. ^20 (N)For we cannot but speak the things which ^(O)we have seen and heard.” ²¹ So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing them, ^(P)because of the people, since they all ^(Q)glorified God for ^(R)what had been done. ²² For the man was over forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed.

Pilate Sets a Guard

⁶² On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, ⁶³ saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ^(A)‘After three days I will rise.’ ⁶⁴ Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come ^[a]by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.”

Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate^(A)

27 When morning came, ^(B)all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. ² And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and ^(C)delivered Him to ^[a]Pontius Pilate the governor.

^3 (A)Then the chief priests, ^[a]the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, ⁴ and ^(B)plotted to take Jesus by ^[b]trickery and kill Him.

⁴⁰ And they agreed with him, and when they had ^(A)called for the apostles ^(B)and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

Gamaliel’s Advice

³³ When they heard this, they were ^(A)furious^[a] and plotted to kill them. ³⁴ Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named ^(B)Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while.

^10 (A)But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, ^11 (B)because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.

^47 (A)Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, ^(B)“What shall we do? For this Man works many signs.
