The Guard at the Tomb

⁶² The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate

⁴² And so, because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

¹⁴ Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover, and it was about noon. He said to the Jews, “Here is your King!”^(A)

The Burial of Jesus

⁴² When evening had come, and since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,^(A)

²⁷ “For in this city, in fact, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the gentiles and the peoples of Israel, gathered together against your holy servant^[a] Jesus, whom you anointed,^{(A) 28} to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.

Jesus’s Side Is Pierced

³¹ Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the Sabbath, especially because that Sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed.^(A)

⁵⁴ It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.^{[a](A) 55} The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how his body was laid.^{(B) 56} Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments.

On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.^(C)

Jesus Brought before Pilate

27 When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus in order to bring about his death. ² They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor.^(A)

The Passover with the Disciples

¹⁷ On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
