⁵⁴ When the centurion and those with him who were guarding^(A) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”^(B)

³⁶ And sitting down, they kept watch^(A) over him there.

³⁹ And when the centurion,^(A) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,^[a] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”^(B)

⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God rescue him^(A) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

⁴⁷ The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God^(A) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” ⁴⁸ When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts^(B) and went away. ⁴⁹ But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,^(C) stood at a distance,^(D) watching these things.

⁴³ But the centurion wanted to spare Paul’s life^(A) and kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land.

Paul Sails for Rome

27 When it was decided that we^(A) would sail for Italy,^(B) Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a centurion named Julius, who belonged to the Imperial Regiment.^(C)

Paul Transferred to Caesarea

²³ Then he called two of his centurions and ordered them, “Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen^[a] to go to Caesarea^(A) at nine tonight.^(B)

³² He at once took some officers and soldiers and ran down to the crowd. When the rioters saw the commander and his soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.^(A)
