³³ They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).^(A)

¹⁷ Carrying his own cross,^(A) he went out to the place of the Skull^(B) (which in Aramaic^(C) is called Golgotha). ¹⁸ There they crucified him, and with him two others^(D)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

¹⁹ Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,^(E) the king of the jews.^(F)

²² They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). ²³ Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,^(A) but he did not take it. ²⁴ And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots^(B) to see what each would get.

²⁵ It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. ²⁶ The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.^(C)

²⁷ They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. ^{[28] [a] 29} Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads^(D) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,^{(E) 30} come down from the cross and save yourself!” ³¹ In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him^(F) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! ³² Let this Messiah,^(G) this king of Israel,^(H) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

³⁴ And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).^[a](A)

²³ When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

²⁴ “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled^(A) that said,

So this is what the soldiers did.

The Death of Jesus^(A)

⁴⁴ It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,^(B)

²⁷ A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed^(A) for him. ²⁸ Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.^{(B) 29} For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’^{(C) 30} Then

³¹ For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”^(E)

³² Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.^{(F) 33} When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. ³⁴ Jesus said, “Father,^(G) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”^[b](H) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.^(I)

³⁵ The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.^(J) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”^(K)

³⁶ The soldiers also came up and mocked him.^(L) They offered him wine vinegar^{(M) 37} and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,^(N) save yourself.”

³⁸ There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.^(O)
