⁷³ After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

⁶ they said, “All right, say ‘Shibboleth.’” If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.

²⁶ One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,^(A) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”^{(B) 27} Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.^(C)

⁵⁹ About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”^(A)

⁶⁰ Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.

²⁴ Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples, and did not know how to speak the language^(A) of Judah.
