Peter Disowns Jesus^(A)

⁶⁹ Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

⁷¹ Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

¹³ When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face^(A) and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

³⁷ After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census^(A) and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered.

⁷ and if he rescued Lot,^(A) a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless^{(B) 8} (for that righteous man,^(C) living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— ⁹ if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials^(D) and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.^(E)

Peter’s Second and Third Denials^(A)

²⁵ Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.^(B) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”

He denied it, saying, “I am not.”^(C)

²⁶ One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,^(D) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”^{(E) 27} Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.^(F)

¹⁶ but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

¹⁷ “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.

He replied, “I am not.”^(A)

¹⁸ It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire^(B) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.^(C)

⁵² They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”^(A)

⁴¹ Others said, “He is the Messiah.”

Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?^(A)
