⁶⁸ saying, ^(A)“Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?”

Jesus Mocked and Beaten^(A)

^63 (B)Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and ^(C)beat Him. ^64 [a]And having blindfolded Him, they ^(D)struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” ⁶⁵ And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.

⁶⁵ Then some began to ^(A)spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers ^[a]struck Him with the palms of their hands.

The Chosen Stone and His Chosen People^(A)

⁴ Coming to Him as to a living stone, ^(B)rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, ⁵ you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. ⁶ Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,

⁷ Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who ^[a]are disobedient,

⁸ and

^(F)They stumble, being disobedient to the word, ^(G)to which they also were appointed.

¹⁴ Now ^(A)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”

¹⁵ But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”

Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”

The chief priests answered, ^(B)“We have no king but Caesar!”

² And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. ^3 [a]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they ^(A)struck Him with their hands.

¹⁸ and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” ¹⁹ Then they ^(A)struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.

³⁹ And ^(A)those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads ⁴⁰ and saying, ^(B)“You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! ^(C)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”

⁴¹ Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the ^[a]scribes and elders, said, ⁴² “He ^(D)saved others; Himself He cannot save. ^[b]If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe ^[c]Him. ^43 (E)He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”

^44 (F)Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.

²⁸ And they ^(A)stripped Him and ^(B)put a scarlet robe on Him. ^29 (C)When they had ^[a]twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
