⁵² But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, ^(A)for all who take the sword will ^[a]perish by the sword.

^10 (A)He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; ^(B)he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. ^(C)Here is the ^[a]patience and the faith of the saints.

¹⁹ Beloved, ^(A)do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ^(B)“Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

²¹ For ^(A)to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for ^[a]us, ^(B)leaving ^[b]us an example, that you should follow His steps:

^23 (D)who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but ^(E)committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;

^9 (A)not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary ^(B)blessing, knowing that you were called to this, ^(C)that you may inherit a blessing.

^34 (A)Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: ^(B)some of them you will kill and crucify, and ^(C)some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, ^35 (D)that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, ^(E)from the blood of righteous Abel to ^(F)the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

^5 (A)“Because you have had an ^[a]ancient hatred, and have shed the blood of the children of Israel by the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, ^(B)when their iniquity came to an end, ⁶ therefore, as I live,” says the Lord God, “I will prepare you for ^(C)blood, and blood shall pursue you; ^(D)since you have not hated ^[b]blood, therefore blood shall pursue you.
