⁵² “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.^(A)

This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness^(B) on the part of God’s people.^(C)

¹⁹ Do not take revenge,^(A) my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”^[a](B) says the Lord.

²¹ To this^(A) you were called,^(B) because Christ suffered for you,^(C) leaving you an example,^(D) that you should follow in his steps.

²³ When they hurled their insults at him,^(G) he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.^(H) Instead, he entrusted himself^(I) to him who judges justly.^(J)

⁹ Do not repay evil with evil^(A) or insult with insult.^(B) On the contrary, repay evil with blessing,^(C) because to this^(D) you were called^(E) so that you may inherit a blessing.^(F)

³⁴ Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify;^(A) others you will flog in your synagogues^(B) and pursue from town to town.^{(C) 35} And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel^(D) to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah,^(E) whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.^{(F) 36} Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.^(G)

⁵ “‘Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword^(A) at the time of their calamity,^(B) the time their punishment reached its climax,^{(C) 6} therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed^(D) and it will pursue you.^(E) Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you.
