⁴⁵ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’^(A)

¹² Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one^(A) and murdered his brother.^(B) And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.^{(C) 13} Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters,^[a] if the world hates you.^{(D) 14} We know that we have passed from death to life,^(E) because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.^{(F) 15} Anyone who hates a brother or sister^(G) is a murderer,^(H) and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.^(I)

¹⁶ This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.^(J) And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.^{(K) 17} If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them,^(L) how can the love of God be in that person?^{(M) 18} Dear children,^(N) let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.^(O)

¹⁹ This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: ²⁰ If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God

5 Everyone who believes^(A) that Jesus is the Christ^(B) is born of God,^(C) and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.^{(D) 2} This is how we know^(E) that we love the children of God:^(F) by loving God and carrying out his commands. ³ In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands.^(G) And his commands are not burdensome,^(H)

The World Hates the Disciples

¹⁸ “If the world hates you,^(A) keep in mind that it hated me first. ¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you^(B) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.^(C)
