⁴⁹ and starts to beat his fellow servants, and eats and drinks with drunkards,^(A)

² They will ban you from the synagogues.^(A) In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service^(B) to God.

⁴ But I have told you these things so that when their time^[a] comes you will remember^(A) I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

Persecutions Predicted

¹⁶ “Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.^(A)

Fear God

²⁶ “Therefore,^(A) don’t be afraid of them, since there is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered and nothing hidden that won’t be made known.^(B)

²⁸ Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; ^(A) rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.^(B)

¹⁴ It deceives those who live on the earth^(A) because of the signs that it is permitted to perform in the presence of the beast,^(B) telling those who live on the earth to make an image^[a] of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.

¹⁵ It was permitted to give breath^[a] to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast could both speak and cause whoever would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.^(A)

¹⁰ For am I now trying to persuade people,^[a] or God?^(A) Or am I striving to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
