²⁸ Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

¹⁵ And He said to them, “You are those who ^(A)justify yourselves ^(B)before men, but ^(C)God knows your hearts. For ^(D)what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

⁵ But all their works they do to ^(A)be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments.

^34 (A)Brood^[a] of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? ^(B)For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ³⁵ A good man out of the good treasure ^[b]of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

⁷ But the Lord said to Samuel, ^(A)“Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have ^[a]refused him. ^(B)For^[b] the Lord does not see as man sees; for man ^(C)looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the ^(D)heart.”

¹² For the word of God is ^(A)living and powerful, and ^(B)sharper than any ^(C)two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is ^(D)a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. ^13 (E)And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are ^(F)naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

^21 (A)For from within, out of the heart of men, ^(B)proceed evil thoughts, ^(C)adulteries, ^(D)fornications, murders, ²² thefts, ^(E)covetousness, wickedness, ^(F)deceit, ^(G)lewdness, an evil eye, ^(H)blasphemy, ^(I)pride, foolishness. ²³ All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”

^19 (A)For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. ²⁰ These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”
