⁴⁰ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”^(A)

⁹ The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,”^[a](A) and whatever other command there may be, are summed up^(B) in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”^[b](C)

¹² So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you,^(A) for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.^(B)

¹⁹ We love because he first loved us.^{(A) 20} Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister^(B) is a liar.^(C) For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen,^(D) cannot love God, whom they have not seen.^{(E) 21} And he has given us this command:^(F) Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.^(G)

God’s Love and Ours

⁷ Dear friends, let us love one another,^(A) for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God^(B) and knows God.^{(C) 8} Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.^{(D) 9} This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son^(E) into the world that we might live through him.^{(F) 10} This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us^(G) and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.^{(H) 11} Dear friends,^(I) since God so loved us,^(J) we also ought to love one another.^(K)

⁸ If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”^[a](A) you are doing right.

¹⁷ For the law was given through Moses;^(A) grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.^(B)

⁵ The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart^(A) and a good conscience^(B) and a sincere faith.^(C)

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says,^(A) it says to those who are under the law,^(B) so that every mouth may be silenced^(C) and the whole world held accountable to God.^{(D) 20} Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;^(E) rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.^(F)

Righteousness Through Faith

²¹ But now apart from the law the righteousness of God^(G) has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.^(H)
