³¹ But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you,

¹⁶ “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.

“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,

³ He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?^(A)

⁴² Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

⁷ If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’^[a](A) you would not have condemned the innocent.

¹³ But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’^[a](A) For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”^(B)
