The Fall of Jerusalem^(A)

^15 (B)And the Lord God of their fathers sent warnings to them by His messengers, rising up early and sending them, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place. ¹⁶ But ^(C)they mocked the messengers of God, ^(D)despised His words, and ^(E)scoffed at His prophets, until the ^(F)wrath of the Lord arose against His people, till there was no remedy.

³⁶ Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and ^(A)of chains and imprisonment. ^37 (B)They were stoned, they were sawn in two, ^[a]were tempted, were slain with the sword. ^(C)They wandered about ^(D)in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented—

^52 (A)Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of ^(B)the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers,

^12 (A)Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for ^(B)so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs

⁹ When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under ^(A)the altar ^(B)the souls of those who had been slain ^(C)for the word of God and for ^(D)the testimony which they held.

³³ Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem.

How can you escape the condemnation of hell? ^34 (D)Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: ^(E)some of them you will kill and crucify, and ^(F)some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, ^35 (G)that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, ^(H)from the blood of righteous Abel to ^(I)the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
