³⁴ When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants^(A) to the tenants to collect his fruit.

¹⁰ At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. ¹¹ He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. ¹² He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.

¹³ “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love;^(A) perhaps they will respect him.’

¹⁴ “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ ¹⁵ So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? ¹⁶ He will come and kill those tenants^(B) and give the vineyard to others.”

When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”

¹⁷ Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written:

¹⁸ Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”^(D)

¹⁹ The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him^(E) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.^(F)

³ Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return^(A) to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’^(B) says the Lord Almighty. ⁴ Do not be like your ancestors,^(C) to whom the earlier prophets^(D) proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways^(E) and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me,^(F) declares the Lord.^{(G) 5} Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? ⁶ But did not my words^(H) and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors?^(I)

“Then they repented and said, ‘The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve,^(J) just as he determined to do.’”^(K)

² At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. ³ But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. ⁴ Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. ⁵ He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.

³ He sent his servants^(A) to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

⁹ “This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice;^(A) show mercy and compassion to one another.^{(B) 10} Do not oppress the widow^(C) or the fatherless, the foreigner^(D) or the poor.^(E) Do not plot evil against each other.’^(F)

¹¹ “But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly^(G) they turned their backs^(H) and covered their ears.^{(I) 12} They made their hearts as hard as flint^(J) and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets.^(K) So the Lord Almighty was very angry.^(L)

¹³ “‘When I called, they did not listen;^(M) so when they called, I would not listen,’^(N) says the Lord Almighty.^(O)

¹⁵ Again and again I sent all my servants the prophets^(A) to you. They said, “Each of you must turn^(B) from your wicked ways and reform^(C) your actions; do not follow other gods^(D) to serve them. Then you will live in the land^(E) I have given to you and your ancestors.” But you have not paid attention or listened^(F) to me.

³ For twenty-three years—from the thirteenth year of Josiah^(A) son of Amon king of Judah until this very day—the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again,^(B) but you have not listened.^(C)

⁴ And though the Lord has sent all his servants the prophets^(D) to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention.^{(E) 5} They said, “Turn^(F) now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land^(G) the Lord gave to you and your ancestors for ever and ever. ⁶ Do not follow other gods^(H) to serve and worship them; do not arouse my anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you.”

⁷ “But you did not listen to me,” declares the Lord, “and you have aroused^(I) my anger with what your hands have made,^(J) and you have brought harm^(K) to yourselves.”
