Jesus at the Temple^(A)

¹² Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying^(B) and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers^(C) and the benches of those selling doves.^(D)

¹⁴ In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,^(A) and others sitting at tables exchanging money.^{(B) 15} So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. ¹⁶ To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house^(C) into a market!” ¹⁷ His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”^[a](D)

⁴⁵ When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. ⁴⁶ “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’^[a];^(B) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’^[b]”^(C)

⁴⁷ Every day he was teaching at the temple.^(D) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.^(E)

¹⁵ On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, ¹⁶ and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. ¹⁷ And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’^[a]?^(A) But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’^[b]”^(B)

¹⁸ The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,^(C) because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.^(D)

¹⁴ “‘If the offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds, you are to offer a dove or a young pigeon.^(A)

⁷ “‘Anyone who cannot afford^(A) a lamb^(B) is to bring two doves or two young pigeons^(C) to the Lord as a penalty for their sin—one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering.

²⁴ and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”^[a](A)

⁸ But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons,^(A) one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering.^(B) In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.^(C)’”

²⁴ But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), ²⁵ then exchange^(A) your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. ²⁶ Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink,^(B) or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice.^(C)
