^24 (A)And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers.

Submit to God, Resist the Devil

⁵ Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, ^(A)all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for

⁵ Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, ^(A)“The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?

⁶ But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:

¹⁴ But if you have ^(A)bitter envy and ^[a]self-seeking in your hearts, ^(B)do not boast and lie against the truth. ^15 (C)This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. ¹⁶ For ^(D)where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. ¹⁷ But ^(E)the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, ^(F)without partiality ^(G)and without hypocrisy. ^18 (H)Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Pride Promotes Strife

4 Where do ^[b]wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure ^(I)that war in your members?

^3 (A)Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but ^(B)in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

^4 (A)Love suffers long and is ^(B)kind; love ^(C)does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not ^[a]puffed up;

^23 (A)Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.

The Disciples Argue About Greatness

^24 (B)Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. ^25 (C)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’
