³ When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and the Pharisees^(A) called a meeting^(B) of the Sanhedrin.^(C)

“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.^{(D) 48} If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”

⁶ But when they did not find them, they dragged^(A) Jason and some other believers^(B) before the city officials, shouting: “These men who have caused trouble all over the world^(C) have now come here,^{(D) 7} and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus.”^(E)

³⁷ “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you,^(A) how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,^(B) and you were not willing.

²⁹ “What do you want with us,^(A) Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”^(B)

² They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.^(A)

²⁰ They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar^{(A) 21} by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans^(B) to accept or practice.”^(C)

²⁴ On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests^(A) were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.

²⁵ Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” ²⁶ At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people^(B) would stone them.

²⁷ The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin^(C) to be questioned by the high priest. ²⁸ “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,”^(D) he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”^(E)

²⁴ When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God.^(A) “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.^{(B) 25} You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:^(C)

²⁷ Indeed Herod^(E) and Pontius Pilate^(F) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,^(G) whom you anointed.
