¹⁸ He said to Him, “Which ones?”

Jesus said, ^(A)“‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’

¹⁰ For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet ^(A)stumble in one point, ^(B)he is guilty of all. ¹¹ For He who said, ^(C)“Do not commit adultery,” also said, ^(D)“Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

The Law Brings a Curse

¹⁰ For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, ^(A)“Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.”

²⁰ You know the commandments: ^(A)‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ^(B)‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ”

Love Your Neighbor^(A)

⁸ Owe no one anything except to love one another, for ^(B)he who loves another has fulfilled the law. ⁹ For the commandments, ^(C)“You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” ^[a]“You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, ^(D)“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” ¹⁰ Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore ^(E)love is the fulfillment of the law.

Murder Begins in the Heart^(A)

²¹ “You have heard that it was said to those ^[a]of old, ^(B)‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ ²² But I say to you that ^(C)whoever is angry with his brother ^[b]without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ^(D)‘Raca!’^[c] shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ^[d]‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of ^[e]hell fire. ²³ Therefore ^(E)if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, ^24 (F)leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. ^25 (G)Agree with your adversary quickly, ^(H)while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison. ²⁶ Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.

Adultery in the Heart

²⁷ “You have heard that it was said ^[f]to those of old, ^(I)‘You shall not commit adultery.’ ²⁸ But I say to you that whoever ^(J)looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
