¹⁷ And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

⁵ You shall keep my statutes and my ordinances; by doing so one shall live: I am the Lord.^(A)

¹¹ Now it is evident that no one is reckoned as righteous before God by the law, for “the one who is righteous will live by faith.”^{[a](A) 12} But the law does not rest on faith; on the contrary, “Whoever does the works of the law^[b] will live by them.”^{(B) 13} Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”^(C)—

²⁶ He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” ²⁷ He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself.”^{(A) 28} And he said to him, “You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.”^(B)

Salvation Is for All

⁵ Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that “the person who does these things will live by them.”^(A)

¹⁶ So we have known and believe the love that God has for us.

God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.

²¹ But the children rebelled against me; they did not follow my statutes and were not careful to observe my ordinances, by whose observance everyone shall live; they profaned my Sabbaths.

Then I thought I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness.^(A)

¹¹ I gave them my statutes and showed them my ordinances, by whose observance everyone shall live.^{(A) 12} Moreover, I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, so that they might know that I the Lord sanctify them.^(B)

²⁹ And you warned them in order to turn them back to your law, yet they acted presumptuously and did not obey your commandments but sinned against your ordinances, by the observance of which a person shall live. They turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck and would not obey.
