¹⁷ “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”^(A)

⁵ Keep my decrees and laws,^(A) for the person who obeys them will live by them.^(B) I am the Lord.

¹¹ Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God,^(A) because “the righteous will live by faith.”^{[a](B) 12} The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.”^{[b](C) 13} Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law^(D) by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”^[c](E)

²⁶ “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

²⁷ He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’^[a];^(A) and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’^[b]”^(B)

²⁸ “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”^(C)

⁵ Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”^[a](A)

¹⁶ And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love.^(A) Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.^(B)

²¹ “‘But the children rebelled against me: They did not follow my decrees, they were not careful to keep my laws,^(A) of which I said, “The person who obeys them will live by them,” and they desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger^(B) against them in the wilderness.^(C)

¹¹ I gave them my decrees and made known to them my laws, by which the person who obeys them will live.^{(A) 12} Also I gave them my Sabbaths^(B) as a sign^(C) between us,^(D) so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.^(E)
