²² As they were gathering^[a] in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands,^(A)

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

²¹ From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised.^(A)

²² saying, “The Son of Man must undergo great suffering and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised.”^(A)

A Third Time Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

³¹ Then he took the twelve aside and said to them, “Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.^{(A) 32} For he will be handed over to the gentiles, and he will be mocked and insulted and spat upon.^{(B) 33} After they have flogged him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise again.” ³⁴ But they understood nothing about all these things; in fact, what he said was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.^(C)

²³ and they will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised.” And they were greatly distressed.

⁵² Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have become his betrayers and murderers.^(A)

⁴⁶ and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah^[a] is^[b] to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day^(A)

²⁶ Was it not necessary that the Messiah^[a] should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?”^(A)

⁶ Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,^{(A) 7} that the Son of Man must be handed over to the hands of sinners and be crucified and on the third day rise again.”
