⁴ An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” Then he left them and went away.^(A)

The Sign of Jonah

²⁹ When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.^{(A) 30} For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation.

³⁹ But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.^{(A) 40} For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth.^(B)

^17 [a]But the Lord provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.^(A)

³⁸ Those who are ashamed of me and of my words^[a] in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”^(A)

¹² And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation.”^(A)

¹⁷ Then they began to beg Jesus^[a] to leave their neighborhood.^{(A) 18} As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him.

¹⁴ Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind.^[a] And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit.”^(A)

³ Then the Lord said, “My spirit shall not abide^[a] in mortals forever, for they are flesh; their days shall be one hundred twenty years.”^(A)

⁶ When they opposed and reviled him, in protest he shook the dust from his clothes^[a] and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the gentiles.”^(A)
