^4 (A)A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of ^[a]the prophet Jonah.” And He left them and departed.

Seeking a Sign^(A)

^29 (B)And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a ^(C)sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah ^[a]the prophet. ³⁰ For as ^(D)Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation.

³⁹ But He answered and said to them, “An evil and ^(A)adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. ^40 (B)For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Jonah’s Prayer and Deliverance

¹⁷ Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And ^(A)Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

^38 (A)For whoever ^(B)is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

¹² But He ^(A)sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, ^(B)no sign shall be given to this generation.”

¹⁷ Then ^(A)they began to plead with Him to depart from their region.

¹⁸ And when He got into the boat, ^(B)he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him.

¹⁴ Let them alone. ^(A)They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”

³ And the Lord said, ^(A)“My Spirit shall not ^(B)strive^[a] with man forever, ^(C)for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
