^54 (A)When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works?

^15 (A)And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”

^16 [a]Jesus answered them and said, ^(B)“My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.

²⁸ And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that ^(A)the people were astonished at His teaching,

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth^(A)

6 Then ^(B)He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. ² And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were ^(C)astonished, saying, ^(D)“Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! ³ Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and ^(E)brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they ^(F)were offended at Him.

⁴ But Jesus said to them, ^(G)“A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” ^5 (H)Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. ⁶ And ^(I)He marveled because of their unbelief. ^(J)Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth^(A)

¹⁶ So He came to ^(B)Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, ^(C)He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. ¹⁷ And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

²⁰ Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. ²¹ And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is ^(F)fulfilled in your hearing.” ²² So all bore witness to Him, and ^(G)marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, ^(H)“Is this not Joseph’s son?”

²³ He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in ^(I)Capernaum,^[c] do also here in ^(J)Your country.’ ” ²⁴ Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no ^(K)prophet is accepted in his own country. ²⁵ But I tell you truly, ^(L)many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; ²⁶ but to none of them was Elijah sent except to ^[d]Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. ^27 (M)And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”

²⁸ So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were ^(N)filled with ^[e]wrath, ^29 (O)and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. ³⁰ Then ^(P)passing through the midst of them, He went His way.

Jesus Heals a Great Multitude^(A)

²³ And Jesus went about all Galilee, ^(B)teaching in their synagogues, preaching ^(C)the gospel of the kingdom, ^(D)and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.

²³ And he came and dwelt in a city called ^(A)Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled ^(B)which was spoken by the prophets, “He shall be called a Nazarene.”

Paul’s Ministry at Rome

¹⁷ And it came to pass after three days that Paul called the leaders of the Jews together. So when they had come together, he said to them: “Men and brethren, ^(A)though I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet ^(B)I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans, ¹⁸ who, ^(C)when they had examined me, wanted to let me go, because there was no cause for putting me to death. ¹⁹ But when the ^[a]Jews spoke against it, ^(D)I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything of which to accuse my nation. ²⁰ For this reason therefore I have called for you, to see you and speak with you, because ^(E)for the hope of Israel I am bound with ^(F)this chain.”

²¹ Then they said to him, “We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brethren who came reported or spoken any evil of you. ²² But we desire to hear from you what you think; for concerning this sect, we know that ^(G)it is spoken against everywhere.”

²³ So when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging, ^(H)to whom he explained and solemnly testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus ^(I)from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning till evening. ²⁴ And ^(J)some were persuaded by the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved. ²⁵ So when they did not agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had said one word: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to ^[b]our fathers, ²⁶ saying,

²⁸ “Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent ^(L)to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!”
