^54 (A)and coming to ^(B)his hometown ^(C)he taught them in their synagogue, so that ^(D)they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?

¹⁵ The Jews therefore ^(A)marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning,^[a] when he has never studied?” ¹⁶ So Jesus answered them, ^(B)“My teaching is not mine, but his ^(C)who sent me.

²⁸ And when Jesus finished these sayings, ^(A)the crowds were astonished at his teaching,

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

6 ^(A)He went away from there and came to ^(B)his hometown, and his disciples followed him. ² And ^(C)on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and ^(D)many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? ^3 (E)Is not this ^(F)the carpenter, the son of Mary and ^(G)brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And ^(H)they took offense at him. ⁴ And Jesus said to them, ^(I)“A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” ⁵ And ^(J)he could do no mighty work there, except that ^(K)he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. ⁶ And ^(L)he marveled because of their unbelief.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

^16 (A)And he came to ^(B)Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And ^(C)as was his custom, ^(D)he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up ^(E)to read. ¹⁷ And ^(F)the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

²⁰ And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and ^(N)sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were ^(O)fixed on him. ²¹ And he began to say to them, “Today ^(P)this Scripture ^(Q)has been fulfilled in your hearing.” ²² And all spoke well of him and marveled at ^(R)the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, ^(S)“Is not this ^(T)Joseph's son?” ²³ And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ^(U)‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did ^(V)at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” ²⁴ And he said, “Truly, I say to you, ^(W)no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. ²⁵ But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when ^(X)the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, ²⁶ and Elijah was sent to none of them ^(Y)but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. ²⁷ And ^(Z)there were many lepers^[a] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, ^(AA)but only Naaman the Syrian.” ²⁸ When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. ²⁹ And they rose up and ^(AB)drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. ³⁰ But ^(AC)passing through their midst, he went away.

Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds

^23 (A)And he went throughout all Galilee, ^(B)teaching in their synagogues and ^(C)proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and ^(D)healing every disease and every affliction among the people.

²³ And he went and lived in a city called ^(A)Nazareth, ^(B)so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.

¹⁷ After three days he called together the local leaders of the Jews, and when they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, ^(A)though I had done nothing against our people or ^(B)the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. ¹⁸ When they had examined me, they ^(C)wished to set me at liberty, ^(D)because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case. ¹⁹ But because the Jews objected, I was compelled ^(E)to appeal to Caesar—though I had no charge to bring against ^(F)my nation. ²⁰ For this reason, therefore, I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is ^(G)because of ^(H)the hope of Israel that I am wearing ^(I)this ^(J)chain.” ²¹ And they said to him, “We have received no letters from Judea about you, and none of ^(K)the brothers coming here has reported or spoken any evil about you. ²² But we desire to hear from you what your views are, for with regard to this ^(L)sect we know that everywhere ^(M)it is spoken against.”

²³ When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening ^(N)he expounded to them, testifying to ^(O)the kingdom of God and ^(P)trying to convince them about Jesus ^(Q)both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets. ²⁴ And ^(R)some were convinced by what he said, but others disbelieved. ²⁵ And disagreeing among themselves, they departed after Paul had made one statement: ^(S)“The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet:

²⁸ Therefore let it be known to you that ^(X)this ^(Y)salvation of God ^(Z)has been sent to the Gentiles; ^(AA)they will listen.”^[a]
