⁵² Then He said to them, “Therefore every ^[a]scribe instructed ^[b]concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure ^(A)things new and old.”

^7 [a]Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had ^(A)from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard ^[b]from the beginning. ⁸ Again, ^(B)a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, ^(C)because the darkness is passing away, and ^(D)the true light is already shining.

⁹ holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

⁶ Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, ⁷ in all things showing yourself to be ^(A)a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, ^(B)incorruptibility,^[a]

The Spirit, Not the Letter

⁴ And we have such trust through Christ toward God. ^5 (A)Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but ^(B)our sufficiency is from God, ⁶ who also made us sufficient as ^(C)ministers of ^(D)the new covenant, not ^(E)of the letter but of the ^[a]Spirit; for ^(F)the letter kills, ^(G)but the Spirit gives life.

^16 (A)All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, ^(B)and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for ^[a]instruction in righteousness, ^17 (C)that the man of God may be complete, ^(D)thoroughly equipped for every good work.

¹⁵ but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ^[a]ground of the truth. ¹⁶ And without controversy great is the ^[b]mystery of godliness:

³⁵ A good man out of the good treasure ^[a]of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.
