³³ “Either make the tree good and ^(B)its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.

A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit^(A)

^43 (B)“For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. ⁴⁴ For ^(C)every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.

^16 (A)You will know them by their fruits. ^(B)Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? ¹⁷ Even so, ^(C)every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. ^19 (D)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ²⁰ Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

^8 (A)Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. ^(B)Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and ^(C)purify your hearts, you double-minded.

^39 (A)Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but ^(B)your inward part is full of ^[a]greed and wickedness. ⁴⁰ Foolish ones! Did not ^(C)He who made the outside make the inside also?

⁸ Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, ⁹ and do not think to say to yourselves, ^(A)‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. ¹⁰ And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. ^(B)Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

^4 (A)Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

⁵ “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much ^(B)fruit; for without Me you can do ^(C)nothing. ⁶ If anyone does not abide in Me, ^(D)he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. ⁷ If you abide in Me, and My words ^(E)abide in you, ^(F)you^[a] will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

¹² Can a ^(A)fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? ^[a]Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.
