Sending Out the Twelve(A)

These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: (B)“Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of (C)the Samaritans.

45 (A)And [a]those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, (B)because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

Then Peter answered, 47 “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit (C)just as we have? 48 (D)And he commanded them to be baptized (E)in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.

Peter Defends God’s Grace

11 Now the apostles and brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, (F)those of the circumcision contended with him, saying, (G)“You went in to uncircumcised men (H)and ate with them!”

But Peter explained it to them (I)in order from the beginning, saying: (J)“I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, an object descending like a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came to me. When I observed it intently and considered, I saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ But I said, ‘Not so, Lord! For nothing common or unclean has at any time entered my mouth.’ But the voice answered me again from heaven, ‘What God has cleansed you must not call common.’ 10 Now this was done three times, and all were drawn up again into heaven. 11 At that very moment, three men stood before the house where I was, having been sent to me from Caesarea. 12 Then (K)the Spirit told me to go with them, doubting nothing. Moreover (L)these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. 13 (M)And he told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house, who said to him, ‘Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon whose surname is Peter, 14 who will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved.’ 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, (N)as upon us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, (O)‘John indeed baptized with water, but (P)you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 (Q)If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, (R)who was I that I could withstand God?”

18 When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, (S)“Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.”

Assyria Resettles Samaria

24 (A)Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, (B)Ava, Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel; and they took possession of Samaria and dwelt in its cities. 25 And it was so, at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they did not fear the Lord; therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which killed some of them. 26 So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The nations whom you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the rituals of the God of the land; therefore He has sent lions among them, and indeed, they are killing them because they do not know the rituals of the God of the land.” 27 Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, “Send there one of the priests whom you brought from there; let him go and dwell there, and let him teach them the rituals of the God of the land.” 28 Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the Lord.

29 However every nation continued to make gods of its own, and put them (C)in the shrines on the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities where they dwelt. 30 The men of (D)Babylon made Succoth Benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima, 31 (E)and the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites (F)burned their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. 32 So they feared the Lord, (G)and from every class they appointed for themselves priests of the [a]high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places. 33 (H)They feared the Lord, yet served their own gods—according to the rituals of the nations from among whom they were carried away.

34 To this day they continue practicing the former rituals; they do not fear the Lord, nor do they follow their statutes or their ordinances, or the law and commandment which the Lord had commanded the children of Jacob, (I)whom He named Israel, 35 with whom the Lord had made a covenant and charged them, saying: (J)“You shall not fear other gods, nor (K)bow down to them nor serve them nor sacrifice to them; 36 but the Lord, who (L)brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power and (M)an outstretched arm, (N)Him you shall fear, Him you shall worship, and to Him you shall offer sacrifice. 37 And the statutes, the ordinances, the law, and the commandment which He wrote for you, (O)you shall be careful to observe forever; you shall not fear other gods. 38 And the covenant that I have made with you, (P)you shall not forget, nor shall you fear other gods. 39 But the Lord your God you shall fear; and He will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.” 40 However they did not obey, but they followed their former rituals. 41 (Q)So these nations feared the Lord, yet served their carved images; also their children and their children’s children have continued doing as their fathers did, even to this day.

Then (A)Philip went down to [a]the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For (B)unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city.

The Sorcerer’s Profession of Faith

But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously (C)practiced [b]sorcery in the city and (D)astonished the [c]people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, 10 to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the great power of God.” 11 And they heeded him because he had astonished them with his [d]sorceries for a long time. 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things (E)concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. 13 Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done.

The Sorcerer’s Sin

14 Now when the (F)apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them (G)that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For (H)as yet He had fallen upon none of them. (I)They had only been baptized in (J)the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then (K)they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

20 But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because (L)you thought that (M)the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21 You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your (N)heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God (O)if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are (P)poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.”

24 Then Simon answered and said, (Q)“Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken may come upon me.”

25 So when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
