³ and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Aram,^(A)

¹² The children of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan), and the children of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.^(A)

²⁹ But just then he drew back his hand and out came his brother, and she said, “What a breach you have made for yourself!” Therefore he was named Perez.^{[a](A) 30} Afterward his brother came out with the crimson thread on his hand, and he was named Zerah.^[b]

Descendants of Judah

4 The sons of Judah: Perez, Hezron, Carmi, Hur, and Shobal.^(A)

¹⁸ Now these are the descendants of Perez: Perez became the father of Hezron,^{(A) 19} Hezron of Ram, Ram of Amminadab, ²⁰ Amminadab of Nahshon, Nahshon of Salmon,^{[a] 21} Salmon of Boaz, Boaz of Obed, ²² Obed of Jesse, and Jesse of David.

²⁰ The descendants of Judah by their clans were: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; of Perez, the clan of the Perezites; of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites. ²¹ The descendants of Perez were: of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the clan of the Hamulites.

²⁴ About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has prostituted herself; moreover, she is pregnant as a result of prostitution.” And Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.”^{(A) 25} As she was being brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law, “It was the owner of these who made me pregnant.” And she said, “Take note, please, whose these are, the signet and the cord and the staff.”^{(B) 26} Then Judah acknowledged them and said, “She is more in the right than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not lie with her again.^(C)

²⁷ When the time of her delivery came, there were twins in her womb.

The Sons of Israel and the Descendants of Judah

2 These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,^{(A) 2} Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.^{(B) 3} The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, and Shelah; these three the Canaanite woman Bath-shua bore to him. Now Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and he put him to death. ⁴ His daughter-in-law Tamar also bore him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all.^(C)

⁵ The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul.^{(D) 6} The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Darda,^[a] five in all.^{(E) 7} The son of Carmi: Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the matter of the devoted thing;^{(F) 8} and Ethan’s son was Azariah.

⁹ The sons of Hezron who were born to him: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai.^{[b] 10} Ram became the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, prince of the sons of Judah.^{(G) 11} Nahshon became the father of Salma, Salma of Boaz, ¹² Boaz of Obed, Obed of Jesse. ¹³ Jesse became the father of Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab the second, Shimea the third,^{(H) 14} Nethanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, ¹⁵ Ozem the sixth, David the seventh;
